They migrate south in late December-early January, and then north in March. There are some resident whales that we see once in a while, but the migratory season is the best time.

j/k

Lots of rabbits have been hopping around on the Iowa snow. I think the squirrels are staying warm in their nests. There've been lots of birds circling and taking food from my feeders. We saw some deer by the road Monday -- the doe looked really heavy.

18. Yeah bunnies! My neighbors and I saved a bunny
last month. A fox had chased it up a drainage pipe and it was literally screaming. It was an eery sound I hope I don't hear again. The fox hung around and didn't care that there was a group of us there. We got the rabbit out and it ran away. Some girl gave the fox sliced turkey...I'm sure that's not the accepted way of handling wildlife but that's what happened.

I make it sound like I live in the stix..I'm actually in a very populated area..

36. I would like to be.
But the only writing I do these days is on DU or for newsletters, committees, and minutes for some professional organizations I belong to.

I also noticed that there are a lot of possum sightings, even in urban areas. Mating season, maybe?

One of my best all-time sightings was years ago when we lived on a small farm in Maryland. A barn owl appeared late at night, right outside my kitchen door. He came back many times that month, and we learned that he had been rehabilitated by our neighbor. He bonded to humans and chose our small farm to hang out at. He landed on our heads and jumped around sometimes. Never hurt us, but it freaked out the dogs when he did it to them.

There is a story there, maybe I should work on it!

Thanks!

A coyote in the yard...Plenty of rabbits....Hawks overhead.

I live in So. Calif. suburbia, close to a brush area.

One day my daughter rushed in to tell me a bird had flown into the garage. I went out and there in the rafters was an enormous hawk quietly feasting on the remains of whatever it was he had caught for lunch.

Waste Manglement hasn't bothered to pick up our trash lately in 'Tosa due to the holidays or Christmas or whatever it's called.

33. Several flocks of snow geese--that was a treat!
Also several Red-tailed hawks, juncos, finches, cardinals, and blue jays.

Deer out in the woods and in the park near my house.

One fox and heard a coyote. All the mice have moved into the barn and are keeping the horses company (well, okay, they are picking up the grain the sloppy eaters leave all over the floor).

Wild Turkey everywhere (the birds, not the drink).

we watched Winged Migration and they talked about Snow Geese. I thought, now there is a bird I've never seen. The next morning I went outside and heard this crane-like honking overhead. Huge flocks of white birds. They were just beautiful against that blue sky one only gets in winter.

34. I saw some large old deer the other day
in a patch of woods near my house. They looked very well fed and were quite gray around their faces. I'd followed a trail into an area that looked like it had been a camp for a homeless person in the warmer months.

I've also seen and heard a broad-winged hawk in the neighborhood and a few mallards at a nearby pond. Then there are the regulars to my yard: cardinals, chickadees, sparrows, robins, mockingbirds, carolina wrens, downy woodpeckers, juncos, blue jays, mourning doves, crows, starlings, and squirrels.

It's odd, though...I've not seen any titmice lately. I wonder if they were hit hard by West Nile?

In spring and summer I can frequently see rabbits from my office window playing outside; but everything's still hiding away at the moment.

There are loads of squirrels round here but they're are all the foreign (American) interlopers. Grey squirrels are taking over from our native red squirrels.

55. Outside my house I have seen
hares, a flock of quail (one of which was grabbed by a hawk :( ) and I even hear a hoot owl at night.

Yesterday, I had a 120 pound Siberian Husky visit my classroom; it belongs to one of my students who weighs no more than 100 pounds (my estimate) and stands only 5'1". What makes this dog so unusual and a good "show and tell" star, is that I am a German teacher and this dog only understands German. The student who owns the dog is from Germany and all the students loved him. This student also brought in her other two dogs which are tiny (and, I mean tiny) Pomeranians, one of which rode on the back of the husky. It was like the Letterman Show in my class, but the animals only responded to commands in German which added an element of fun for the kids. :)

BTW, I want to post a photo of this dog, but I cannot figure out how to do it. Can anyone help me? I have tried copying and pasting, but that does not work.

I was debating what to do, if the coyote got close, but the rabbit appears to have outwitted him!

Routinely, deer.... Just missed seeing a Mountain Lion by a half hour as one was spotted out in Golden very close to where I was. (But, being that I was on foot, with my dog, not seeing it was probably a very good thing!)

62. Lately, not much.
I live in a city, so it's pretty much the same thing every day:

Pigeons
Squirrels
House Sparrows
Starlings
Red-tailed Hawks

I have seen some other things, though, just not lately (This is stuff all seen in the city limits, not during a birdwatching trip or anything):

in the summer, i usually see Turkey Vultures.
I've seen Ring-Billed Gulls flying very high over the office
I've had a House Finch land on my office window sill
Red-bellied Woodpecker in tree outside my house, Carolina Chickadees, Blue Jays, Northern Cardinals.
Sharp-shinned Hawk in a city park
Barn and Cliff Swallows feeding off a bridge that crosses a river.

I've seen tons of stuff in the metroparks, but I wanted to list the things I have seen just doing normal city activities.

I don't know how wild or tame they were, but the donkey especially was in the middle of nowhere. We drove through the desert and desert-y mountians, and saw all the above mentioned animals.

70. Bobcat ...
They look cute, but ... :scared: ... When I see one in the woods, I don't make any sudden movements.

73. Lots of big fat ravens feasting on roadkill...
...and a herd of elk, probably 60 or so...about a week ago. I see redtail hawks all the time.

74. Here in my part of New Jersey we have wild turkeys, too many deer,
foxes, groundhogs, a few coyotes, and last year, a few much remarked upon black bears who liked taking down bird feeders and were frequently photographed doing so. (They also ate some local sheep.)

We have turkey vultures, mice, rabbits, rats (yes rats), hawks, cardinals, snowy owls (gorgeous animals in the night) and other owls. We have a ton of birds that I can't name.

We need wolves, but I don't think we'll get them.

With the exception of the bears, and maybe the coyotes (which I've heard), I'm sure I've seen at least one example of each of the animals in the last two months. Sometimes I wake up in the morning and the deer in my yard are as numerous as groupies at a 1960's Rolling Stones concert.

I'm not sure how to post a picture but here goes. I took this picture this morning. I think it's a Northern Flicker. I should have added that, yes, I am a huge dork. I feed the boids and the sqoils and occasionally take pictures of them. Sue me. :P
