Poll question: The new Battlestar Galactica frackin' ROCKS!
I just saw the miniseries on Sci Fi, and am eagerly awaiting the start of the series on Friday. This show has many of the elements that I loved about B5.

Hardly more than a hastily marketed Dykstrafuckfest, in fact.

13. You betcha the new Battle Star Galactica is frackin great!

OK, frack is like frell in Farscape. Correct? Like frackin, furkin, freakin, frugen steinen! Yah!

I'm really looking forward to the series. And I love the fact the Starbuck is a woman. In the original, Starbuck and Appolo were kind of irritating. Also, I'm missing kick ass women. That female Cylon is spooky. Do you think her metal mind really cares for Gaius, or is he being used?? I know, stupid question.

Edward Almos and the actress whose name I have temporarily forgotten add some class to the show. Somewhat like Patrick Stewart did for Star Trek Next Generation.

31. The original cyclons WILL be in the series
So I heard, anyway. There was a passing reference to them in the miniseries when the blonde mentioned that they were still around, and had their uses.

The CG Cylon robots will make up the bulk of the visible Cylon army, but there will be enough guys in shiny chrome suits to make the old-school fans happy.

Personally, I hope they bring Muffett back. That dog was too cool ;)

16. Battlestar Galactica
I didn't notice in the miniseries, but does this version have "socialators"? Being a history buff, I thought it was really great that they had haetira/geishas in Colonial society.

34. Didn't have them in the miniseries/pilot...
...but there Cassiopea was there to illustrate the plights of the refugees and to give Starbuck a love triangle. Since the new Starbuck's a woman, there are other options for the triangle, and the "refugee" angle was pretty much filled by the little girl on the botany ship.

I thought the idea of socialators was interesting, but the original never treated it as anything other than "expensive call girl". If the revisit the concept this time I hope they do more with it.

20. The miniseries blows compared to the "real" series, I hear
I'm not overly fond of the miniseries for a number of reasons-- mostly its take on technology the whole "evil network computer" schtick. I also liked it better when the Cylons were a race of aliens whose machines killed them off. IMHO the old Cylons were a precursor to the Borg of ST:TNG in that respect.

The miniseries is a little weak in most respects; however, I hear the series itself is much better.

Edited on Thu Jan-13-05 03:53 PM by UdoKier
I like the ship designs and all, but the FX bug me a bit when they put the faux "camera shake" and faux "camera zooms" on the CG footage of the space battle scenes. I don't mind a little, but they overdo it, and it makes it harder to follow the action. Also, everything is so dim, that it's a bit hard to see. Probably looks better on DVD though.

28. Yeah, it makes it look cheap
I dunno if they're doing it for "special realistic effect", but IMHO it just looks like the camera operator is drunk. Who knows, maybe they blew through the FX budget doing the nukes, and they couldn't afford anything cooler.

30. I disagree, I liked that technique.
You get a much better sense of scale with the wide shots of the big capital ships and then zooming in to show a small fighter.

The shot just after the title is a perfect example, you see a moon, fly past a small crack in the side of it, and off in the distance you see a small object, it continues to zoom in and it's the enormous Battlestar Galactica.

I also like how dim it is, and they cut way down on the noise. Space Operas are always to bright and, obviously, noisy. They've found a nice medium between scientific realism and dramatic effect.

32. I like the lack of noise, but the camera tricks are cheesy & fake-looking
We all know there is no "camera", or any "action to follow". It's insulting to the viewer's intelligence to imply that there are cameramen on the hull of the Galactica, desperately trying to get great shots of the action.

I don't mind subtle camera shakes and zooms, but what they've done looks amateurish and hamhanded, and diminishes what are basically pretty good effects.

Not that this is important enough to argue about...

24. Reviews of first episode from AICN - warning, spoilers galore
Battlestar Galactica 1.1 FAQ

Where does it pick up from the mini-series?
Apparently 118.5 hours after the mini-series left off. This has all been without sleep for the Galactica¡¯s crew as the Cylons are continually chasing them ¨C this is brilliantly outlined in the opening 5 minutes of the show; exactly 33 minutes after each faster than light jump the Cylons jump in again to harrass the convoy on its way. This is now the 237th jump that the convoy has made in a row and nerves are getting tattered.

Is Gaius still hallucinating about the gorgeous 6?
Oh yes ¨C she¡¯s still present and correct appearing both with the rest of the crew of Colonial 1, where Gaius currently is (but of course they can¡¯t see her) and in scenes of Caprica in Gaius¡¯s imagination. She apparently continues to maintain a neutral point of view in their discussions together which still leaves us undecided whether she is just part of his imagination or whether she did implant a chip in his brain, as suggested in the mini-series.
His mental state seems even more erratic to the others especially when he hears that there is a doctor from the Defense Department amongst the survivors who wants to talk to the President about something he¡¯s uncovered ¨C about how the Cylons got through their defenses.
