Clarification on "Have a Blessed Day" Thread |
|
I am not out to root out all use of the phrase "blessed day" in social discourse.
I was inspired to post the original post after hearing the phrase used as a snarky parting shot by a winger on CSPAN who was parroting the usual talking points about the war in Iraq or separation of church and state or persecution of Christians in godless America. But if you read my first post, there is no mention of Christianity, no mention of religion--no comment on the phrase at all, just a solicitation for alternatives to the phrase, with a suggestion: "have a rational day." Ironically, this minimalist post caused almost the same kind of offense--or defense?--in some people as "have a blessed day" causes in me. I think we who take offense--or defense?--at such things should all pause to reflect on that. There's some common ground in there.
So let me state again, more clearly: I am capable of discerning sincere good wishes or natural politeness from snarky and hypocritical self-righteousness. My post was inspired by a snarky hypocrite's use of it.
The rest of you have my blessing to use it whenever you want. ;)

8. Well, the principle that we are all equally sacred beings ... |
|
is the hallmark of my faith, Church of Religious Science. Just curious, where did this phrase come from?

9. I believe it's taken from Sanskrit |
|
and was initially used by Hindus. It's really quite complicated, as it involves a gesture as much as the word "namaste". Here's some info you might enjoy reading: http://www.exoticindiaart.com/article/namaste

I printed it out. My church had a lecturer come on Sunday, and I missed him. His contention was that when Ernest Holmes founded our belief system in the 1920's (Church of Religious Science), he based it largely on beliefs from ancient India (Hindu?). I'm really sorry I missed that lecture. Holmes also studied the Bible, Thoreau, Emerson, Buddhism, etc. That's why the Church is so much fun. That article really was informative! Thanks again.
