Edited on Fri Jan-14-05 05:29 AM by imenja
Lots of people have seen it, Brazilians and those who like Latin American cinema. It's a beautiful film. There is a new version, done by a Brazilian director. It's not as beautifully made, but it gives a far more realistic view of live in the favelas.

17. Yup, that's the one.
You see their lips moving in French and hear English. It kinda reminds me of B*sh using his war on terra to strip away civil rights. "Don't question me! There is a Beast that will Punish you! Do as I say! It is the Will of God!"

30. THe hero leaves civilization at the end to run Shangri-La
and await the collapse of the governments of the world in the centuries to come. Fortunately, you do not age in Shangri-la.

Then the world is saved as the hero brings knowledge based on spirituality back to the new Dark Ages.

8. "Seven Days in May", a fabulous 1950s conspiracy flick about

And "Sweet Liberty", an extremely funny Alan Alda/Michael Caine film.

13. Niagara, Niagara
with Meg Tunny and Henry Thomas. Very dark romantic comedy. Probably my favorite soundtrack of all time from a movie.

She is a girl with Tourettes Syndrome, he mildey retarded (or just extremeley introverted and thus socially inept). They met accidentally while both are shoplifting, and end up going on a road trip to Niagra Falls together.

Dark story, dark ending, great movie.

Unfortunately, it's not available on DVD, but I was able to find a copy on VHS at a rental place that was going out of business several years ago.

Highly recommended!

16. "A Captive in the Land"
one of the first collaborations between the US and Russia after the breakup of the Soviet Union. Set in the Arctic, it is the story of an American meteorologist who sets out to rescue a person from a plane crash-to his horror,he finds out the survivor is a Russian! The rescue helicopter doesn't come, and the men find themselves alone on the ice for the entire winter. Since the Russian is paralyzed, the American realizes the only way to save both their lives is to walk over 360 miles, pulling a sledge with the injured Russian on it! A great survival movie. I recommend it, as it is my favorite film.

An amazingly creative film about the post WW2 German railroad, the Werewolves (the German anti American/ anti Nazi resistance), and a young German-American man who gets a job with Zentropa, the German RR co.

It is hypnotizing and has you asking questions at the same time as having you on the edge of your seat.

133. Strange you should mention Gas-s-s-s
Didn't know til now that the movie was ever completed and released.

Parts of the film were shot on the SMU campus in 1968 or 1969, memory is foggy here as to the exact date.

The plot was that some gas got lose and killed everyone over 25.

Mrbill was an extra in a tracking shot portraying wild debachery set on the front porch of the Kappa Sig frat house.

Wasn't a Kappa Sig but the casting director or whatever liked my long hair and told a group of us to pretend like we were smoking marijuana, while everybody else had beer and wildly gyrated. Gave a very convincing performance.

Watched the theatres for years, it never came out, or did in very limited release.

Must get a copy of the video or dvd to see if mrbill ended up in the film or on the cutting room floor.

I probably took a long time to be released, unfortunately it's almost impossible to find on video...maybe an old retail place that sells used videos from way back might have a copy?

34. The Reflecting Skin
directed by Philip Ridley

In the 1950s, a young boy loses his innocence as he uncovers the rotten underbelly of his picture-perfect town. From afar, he observes local residents driven mad or beset by disease, both possibly due to government-sponsored radiation experiments. He also becomes entranced by his new neighbor, a young widow, and suspects she is a vampire.

65. I've seen that
once on tv a long time ago, probably 30 years.

I enjoyed it very much. My memory was that it was silent, but I know it is from 1937 or so, so now I think it must have been German with subtitles. Either way, the dialog was hard for me to follow :)

I guess I vote Steve Buscemi.

in that it is damn near impossible to take your eyes off of him.
I always tell people that Lorre was the greatest scene stealer of all time. Just try not to look at him. You can't do it. The other actors never stood a chance with Lorre on screen.

one scene was revolting and you walked out? Takes more than that for me, it was gross, but within the frame of the movie, it made sense in a freaky way. There's a lot more to the movie than that one scene...but you are certainly entitled to your opinion. Like I said, you either love it or hate it. I loved it.

I fell asleep during Big, and everyone else loved it, to each his own, I guess.

That scene I mention was the limit, a culmination of an extreme level of grotesque violence I could not bear. I know it is hailed as a great film artistically, but for me the violence overwhelmed everything else.
I won't see Kill Bill of the The Passion for similar reasons.

210. I agree with you on Passion, but I did see the Kill Bills...
thought they were great, the violence was mostly campy in the first one, and the second had less than the first. More realistic, but less anyway. I really like Tarantino, so they were must-sees for me. I prefer less violence in film, but see how it can be appropriate sometimes, TCTTHW&HL is in that group for me, I can see how some would disagree.

Edited on Thu Jan-13-05 09:04 PM by Xipe Totec
With Anthony Hopkins, Jessica Lange and Harry Lennix. Based on Shakespeare's play of the same name. It explores hatred and revenge the way Romeo and Juliet explore love (to the absolute extreme).

Lennix gives a very frightening performance as Aaron the Moor.

Jessica Lange's scene as the Goth queen Tamara, where she begs Titus to spare her son's life, is absolutely chilling.

Also a cool movie Nobody's seen.

directed (& written?) by Terry Gilliam of Monty Python animation fame. Set in the grim and terrorist-ridden future, it's a Kafka-esque tale of big brother paranoia and justifiable fear, and darkly hilarious in parts. It's one of those movies you talk about for hours after you watch it, and some of the scenes and circumstances have really become reference points for me in today's 'murika.

68. Night on Earth
Directed by Jim Jarmusch

Five vignettes of life as seen from the perspective of a cab driver in five different cities, on the same night.

Sounds simple...maybe boring...but oh, what a film. I loved it.

Just keep in mind...the cab is the only connection. You're not seeing one story...but five short ones. If you don't like short stories, this film will leave you flat.

Foreign Film, and has a cult following, but never became big with
the mainstream. Best anti-war film ever IMO.

And Lawn Dogs - it's just came to cable in Australia - I've seen it
twice, and can't stop thinking about it. Brilliant.

85. Lodge Kerrigan's "Claire Dolan"...
starring Katrin Cartlidge, Vincent D'Onofrio, and Colm Meaney. A haunting and realistic portrayal of a call girl trying to leave the life. No sassy, wisecracking whores with a heart of gold in this little seen film.
Highly recommended.

Also:

Bottle Rocket (although I know on DU that people have seen it, my non-DU friends mostly have not);

The Thin Man Series (friends over 50 more likely to have seen it).

that's where they smuggle LSD into the prison on puzzle pieces. The movie as a whole was great, but for whatever reason that's the scene that comes to mind.

Have you seen The Boxer? It's by the same director and also has Day-Lewis in an IRA tale. It's not as good as Father, but I liked it.

106. Men With Guns
By John Sayles, about the fighting in s. Mexico. A great movie, and quite daring, considering it was the follow-up to Lone Star, a huge critical and fair commercial success, and yet it contained no English and included both Spanish and numerous Indigenous languages.

246. I always, no matter how many times I've seen it,
cry at the end when Johanna reads the letter and we see how the wires got so sadly crossed and two people who loved each other so deeply wound up hating each other(they thought),and it was all because of a stupid blunder by the landlady at the inn(I'm never sure when I watch if she did it on purpose or not). I've read that there really was a letter to his "Immortal Beloved" found amongst Beethoven's possessions after he died, but no one is really sure who she was,and the movie is speculation. If it really was that way,it's too sad for words. The way the movie shows Johanna sitting at the window reading the letter-and bursting into anguished tears, and you can see her but not hear her, only the music,is so affecting.

125. Besieged
Thandie Newton (uh, yum!) is a woman from Africa working on a medical degree while keeping house in trade for rent for an odd, loner, piano teacher in Rome. Said piano teacher is falling in love with her, silently, while she is trying to stay mentally faithful to a husband she believes is quite possibly dead at the hands of the junta-ist who took him away.

You'd almost have to see a Charlie Chaplin film to find a movie that says so much with so little dialogue.

a great doc that was just released in one theater in New York a few weeks ago about Henry Darger, an "outsider artist" whose voluminous work was found in his one room apartment after he died in "a Catholic mission operated by the Little Sisters of the Poor" in Chicago.

Here's the film's website: http://www.realmsoftheunreal.com/

I highly suggest putting "Henry Darger" in Google and prepare to be fascinated.

199. It's an independent film
about a group of young teens in the deep south in the 80s. It's VERY good, very well filmed and touching, but not in a syrupy way at all.

I used to show it to eighth graders for film analysis and they went bonkers over it.

If you get a chance to see it, do. You won't regret it.

Released in 1983, a beautifully-shot Canadian film about an aging gentleman bandit in the turn-of-the-century (20th) Pacific Northwest. Full of terrifically underplayed surprises. Score by The Chieftains.

LOL! I loved Cold Comfort Farm. That is a true treasure and has an amazing cast (Ian McKellen, Kate Beckinsale, Stephen Fry, Eileen Atkins).

By the way, I must be "nobody," because I've seen (and loved) a lot of the movies on this thread, such as The Ref, Cinema Paradiso, The Snapper, The Commitments, and Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet.

I'd add to the list, though. Has anyone else here seen:

Hobson's Choice (As John Mills would say, "By gum!")

The Brother from Another Planet

Cold Feet (with a very memorable part for Tom Waits)

Jacknife (the De Niro movie you probably haven't seen)

214. How many people have seen Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing?"
Lee was, as usual, fabulous as Mookie. Ozzie Davis and Ruby Dee were in it.

Danny Aiello was great in that movie. I think how he made Sal sympathetic was tremendous. John Turturro was great too.

That movie really did something...

228. Of course, but did you see "She Gotta Have It"?
Lee's first film. Not for the kids, it's about a very liberated young black woman and her three lovers, but a great flick. I had the odd experience of seeing it at an early screening and was the only white person in the audience.

253. What about 'Bamboozled'.
I saw it in the theater and lots of people got up and walked out on it.

I liked it and think it's Spike Lee's best film.

258. Crimes and Misdemeanors
I think it's Woody's best, and the performance by Martin Landau was chilling.

Another movie I've ever seen but I don't think was circulated in the movie theathers much was "Rapture". Mimi Rogers is superb in this flick.

Andy Griffith, Patricia Neal. Drama. circa 1959.

Rise and fall of drifter turned television star.

Stellar performances by Griffith and Neal make this a great choice.

224. It is a fantastic movie (and Kazan's only flawless film)...
Andy Griffith is phenomenal in it. Due to his seemingly effortless naturalistic style. he is perhaps the world's most underrated actor.
And, of course, its portrayal of a power-mad "just plain folks" public figure certainly resonates today.

231. "The Aviator"
Apparently very few people are seeing this, which sucks because it's the best movie I've seen in a looooong time (and 2004 was a great year for movies). Maybe if it does well at the Oscars it'll do more business.

241. All I'm saying
is that it's getting overshadowed by horsesh--t like "Meet the Fockers," and it really does seem overlooked for a Scorsese movie.

But I know what you mean, and I'd have to say "Dick" from 1999. That is probably one of the funniest movies I have ever seen and no one's ever heard of it.

Obscure movie I recommend "Carnival of Souls". Creepy. Another off-the-wall creepy one: Incident at Owl Creek Bridge. Not a full-length movie; about 20 minutes or so.

It has Hugh Grant as Lord Byron and Valentine Pelka as Shelley. It's very...different, but I liked it. Also, Elizabeth Hurley's in it.

I went to see it with a guy I was seeing at the time. For some reason, Burns' character resonated with him because he laughed nearly the entire time. I also like the theme song "I Will Remember You" by Sarah McLaughlin.

262. I highly recommend the Japanese "Shall We Dance?"
I went to see that a second time, bringing a friend who is a dance instructor. He fell head over heels in love with it and said he could have put a name to every character, as they were so like the people he knew in dance circles.

As much as anything, "Shall We Dance?" is about the need for a creative outlet. It's a must-see for DUers, especially those who feel they're in some sort of a rut.

Requiem was deeply disturbing, but incredible. "I'm Not Afraid" was a little Italian film I saw this summer. Amazingly well done.

And, I know you won't believe this, but I *love* "Best Intentions"! I watched it 3 or 4 times on Bravo!, back when it was commercial-free. Remember? (sigh) Those were the good ole days....
