Favorite old Elton John song |
|
For some reason, I just recently discovered that Elton's older stuff, like around the time I was born, is REALLY GOOD! Most of his newer stuff I don't like as much, but that early 70's music by him is hard to beat. I like most of his songs on "Madman across the Water", and others around that time frame. Tiny Dancer, Holiday Inn, Levon, and Rocketman are my favorites.
How about you folks?

And the title track was my favorite song for a while when I was in pre-school. I was a weird kid, what can I say? :D

5. He had really good music! |
|
I like his more progressive sounding music. Alas, he, as Phil Collins have become a tad sappy as they have gotten older.

24. I like the "Madman" album, even if Elton said once that... |
|
...he hated the vocals and wanted to re-record them. I think it remains his best overall album. I specifically like "Tiny Dancer," "Levon," and the title track. Elton was good friends with John Lennon, and the song "Madman Across The Water" is probably as close as he'll ever come to "Plastic Ono Elton"...it's perfect, what can I say.
He did a ten minute version of "Rocket Man" on a cable special once. There was an extended slide guitar solo, and he was yelling out things like "I miss my kids, I miss my wife, I wanna wanna wanna wanna go HOME..."
It was one of those performances that made the hair stand up on the back of yer arms...more John Lennon-style anguish. Of course, he pulled out "Empty Garden"...his tribute to John Lennon, after his assasination...at a time when I thought his talent had long left him in the dust. That "I've been calling, but no one answers" refrain still chokes me up.
Elton, if anything, is full of surprises. There are many, many, MANY instances in his career in which he has sailed by on "autopilot"...a shame, because he has recorded some timeless stuff among the dreck.
I think "Harmony" from "Yellow Brick Road" is one of his best songs PERIOD. He said that it was Princess Diana's favorite song...
I can't stomach his songs like "The Bitch Is Back"...for me, that was the beginning of the end. Although I know someone will probably step up and say that it's THEIR favorite...c'est la vie.

27. I have found what I missed as a kid |
|
At least I liked the Beatles. I suppose growing up liking them led me to good taste in music. Most of Elton John's music in his early career was just such high quality. It is strange, his vocals do seem better on his later albums, but the rawness of his falsettos catch my ear more than the elegance of his current style.

Do you read any rock history? My daughter is a sort of rock historian and the stuff she ferrets out and tells me makes the old songs even more precious.
And read Lennon's stuff. The man sure could play with words.

Imagine is one of my favorite songs ever, so simply, clearly stated. I love Peter Gabriel's music for the same reason I liked Lennon. There is a great depth and intensity in the vocals (words and the performance). I like how Gabriel uses the language.
