Who's your hero
The world is is suffering a dearth of heroes. Reach back in time or across the table who is your hero?

10. The link
Misses a major part of the story.

There was an amazing letter that was found that had his "thoughts before the (last) game" illustrating the depth of the man.

Wish I could locate it.

4. My mother
She'd given up her nursing job to be a housewife when she had my brother at 31. She adopted me when she was 41; my dad died when I was 5, so she was 46. He was the love of her life. She never re-married. She got a job, paid off the mortgage & put us both through college. She taught me all about being strong and self-sufficient, while not complaining about the bad hand you're dealt. She raised me to be accepting of EVERYONE.

Two years ago, when the love of my life died suddenly at 36, she wiped my tears away, and helped me stand up & survive, just as she had. Even though I hadn't gotten married to my love, she never made me feel like my loss was any less than hers was 29 years ago. She grieved with me.

She sacrificed so much to see that my brother & I had a good life. I just hope that I can be half the woman that she is.

6. Heroes of reason and freedom
Edited on Thu Jan-13-05 11:58 PM by Az
Benjamin Franklin, renaissance man...scoundrel, scientist...lover, patriot... turkey lover.

Thomas Jefferson, A good example of why no one should be placed on a pedestal. Like all people he had flaws. But where he was great he was a giant.

Carl Sagan, Champion of reason and science. We need more people like Saga. Science is not a destroyer. It is not a cold and passionless disassembler. It marvels at the world around it and dicovers ever increasing beauty and wonder.

Sun Tzu, The man that realised that the warrior who first draws his sword loses is a man to marvel at.

Lao Tzu, His original ideas showed a deep understanding of nature and social systems. Balance in all things.

Socrates, someone told him he was the wisest man in all the world. He set out to prove them wrong. Managed to prove that no one likes being proven they are wrong. And if they have control of the senate its gonna be bad for you. His last words, "I drank what?" In actual fact his final words show a great insite into the truth of social structure and predate the Golden Rule.

Voltaire, Showed amazing courage and bravery in a time where such qualities could easily cost you your head. We need such a person to stand up today and speak truth to power once again.

Mark Twain, Demonstrated that some times the single best way to take a person down was with humor and wit. A man born far to ahead of his time.
