Words of advice from a (possibly) paranoid guy |
|
Edited on Fri Jan-14-05 02:15 AM by Floogeldy
Don't respond to posts asking for first name, age, what kind of car you drive, where you live, why your parents named you, what you do for a living, etc. . . . And don't put your birthday in your profile.
Over time, information can add up and you might be identified for whatever reason.

2. Anyone who wants to find out about me can just look up my domain |
|
names that I have registered... Doesn't matter much to me, as I'm not doing anything worthy of going after :-)

11. It's possible now to shield your private info from prying eyes... |
|
I signed my domains up primarliy as a way to fend off spammers. Besides, the whole world doesn't need to know my addresses and phone numbers. http://www.networksolutions.com/en_US/name-it/private.jhtml

4. I considered posting under my real name for a while |
|
I only didn't do that because I'm recognizeable as Droopy and I didn't feel like starting over again.
I really don't care if people know who I am.

5. Thats why I started the post your Social Security thread that got yanked |
|
Its a bad idea to post information about yourself in an open forum such as this. The SS thread was to make this vividly clear. It was correctly yanked by the mods. But I hope some people got the point.

7. Someone actually did a parody of those threads. It was titled... |
|
"What's your social security number?" I had to laugh.

10. Absolutely agree. There's been a spate of those posts in recent weeks |
|
There was one today that asked respondents to post their names without vowels. Combine that with all the previous threads -- age, hometown, etc. -- and it all adds up to something kinda suspicious.

14. Just cuz you're paranoid, they still might be out to get ya. |
|
Good advice. Posting name, car, all that personal stuff, jeeze, might as well go to a Kla'n meeting wearing a tee shirt with a target on it and a big button proclaiming: 'Wingers suck'
Go ahead and fight to the death for your views, but don't do things to hurry your own demise.
The world is full of people who are not as nice as you are. That is a lesson liberals had best learn pronto.

19. I doubt that anybody would consider me worth targetting |
|
and I am extremely outspoken about my political views in public under my real name anyway.
Nevertheless, I have to admit that I'm a little uncomfortable with threads wondering what county I live in and stuff like that.

20. The reality is there are some sick puppies in the world. |
|
I heard that one person here on DU was attacked by freepers who found out where she worked and she lost her job. This is before my time so I don't know for sure.
It does make a case for being careful with ones personal information, however.
