Someone at work said Texas is one of the States with LOWER crime rates
and bigger gun ownership (well, that latest part I believe).

I'm about certain he pullet this out of his ass. Where can I find official statistics to shut his mouth?

5. I found this -- not by state but by region
And wow, what a surprise...

Thanks for the tip! I couldn't find per-state equivalents there, though.

4. Here are a couple
Edited on Fri Jan-14-05 01:09 PM by Worst Username Ever
Compare cities head-to-head (I did minneapolis to Dallas, staggering)

http://www.bestplaces.net/html/crime_compare.asp

Here is a ranking of the 6 main types of crime. A "1" is extremel;y high, a "50" is extremely low. Texas is in the teens, meaning at LEAST the top half of the scale, in all of them. In fact it ranks 13th out of 50 on a couple of them, I think.

USA 2002 crime stats per region. Couldn't find per-state stats for now. But notice the worst rate is from the South (includes Texas), the most conservative, pro-gun, pro-Bush region. The best index is in the Northeast, the most liberal, least pro-gun, most anti-Bush region.

http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/cius_02/html/web/arrested/04-table30.html

Now, in this other page, you can do a city vs. city comparison:

http://www.bestplaces.net/html/crime_compare.asp

For instance, let's see Dallas vs. New York:

14. Well, yeah, if you get into "violent crime per square mile"; When I
saw the Red/Blue state comparison in Selection 2000, I thought "Gee, a lot of room to dump bodies and not be able to find them for a while."

Also, "Hmm, Red. Blood = Red."

28. Cherry-picking data
Edited on Sun Jan-16-05 11:55 AM by slackmaster
I can do that too. Anyone in California with a clean criminal record can get a handgun. San Diego is about evenly split liberal vs. conservative. There are a lot of gun owners and a lot of guns here, but somehow we manage to have a murder rate less than half of NYC's.

http://www.bestplaces.net/html/crimecompare3.asp?lcity=8480&rcity=9840&view=T

How about comparing NYC with Washington, DC where it's almost impossible to get a handgun legally? New Yorkers can get them to keep at home. It's a hassle but pretty much anyone who wants one can get one.

http://www.bestplaces.net/html/crimecompare3.asp?lcity=8669&rcity=9840&view=T

Wow. In Washington, DC you are about 4.5 times more likely to be murdered than you are in NYC.

Could it be that crime rates have something to do with the people who live in a city?

16. The Brady data is subjective data however, if one compares the
grade of each state with the Uniform Crime Reports for 2003, then there appears to be no relationship between the grade and either the index of "Violent crime" or "Murder and nonnegligent manslaughter" for states.

I did not examine the relationship between grades and "Forcible rape", "Robbery", "Aggravated assault", "Property crime", "Burglary", "Larceny-theft", and "Motor vehicle theft".

My observation is consistent with reports released by special review committees that found that none of the studies examined produced acceptable statistical evidence that gun laws reduce crime.

18. The Brady grades are non-metric data therefore
it is useless to run a correlation analysis on grades and crime measures like “violent crime” per 100,000. However, if one were to assign metric data values to Brady grades like class scores; e.g. A+ of 5.0, B+ of 4.0; then the correlation between grades and violent crime is about 0.1, i.e. no correlation.

Given that the grades are highly subjective data, the actual relationship would be lower than a statistic like the false correlation value of about 0.1.

19. Guy oughta know better
There is a general rule you can follow when it comes to Texas and statistical rankings. If it's something good, we rate very low on it; if it's something bad we rate very high on it. Remember what a blast Shrub had explaining Texas's abysmal record on just about every issue whenever he ran for Pres. the first time?

22. BWA!!!
Um, yeah, right. And I'm the virgin Queen of England.

You would THINK we would, since we have the death penalty and use it a LOT, since it is SUPPOSED to be a deterrent. But with how much we use it, you'd think we should have zero crime.

I doubt we are one of the states with lower crime rates. I doubt that very seriously. We have at least 5-7 major urban areas and that alone knocks us out of the competition with states with fewer urban areas.

30. Restricting guns does not reduce violent crime
The state of New York has 465 violent crime incidents per 100,000 but Vermont has only 110. New York restricts gun ownership but Vermont does not.
