MLK Day-Who has a three-day weekend ?
I know I know we shouldn't think of it just as a day off but I am curious as to how much this really is observed.

Here in Virginia.....are you ready for this.....TODAY is Lee-Jackson day so all state offices are closed-Monday is King day so all state offices are closed again. They couldn't let Dr.King have a day without celebrating Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson (born is what is NOW WEST Virginia).

3. Wife and I, both
I work in state gubmit, wife works for a university. So we both got it off this year. A nice suprise, really.

Maybe they should change Lee-Jackson day to Jackson-Lee day, in honor of Sen. Jackson-Lee? Just an idea...

24. I'll probably go in monday.
Its too cold to do anything outside here. If i don't use it in feb, i'll use it later, maybe at easter.

I don't ski, so winter holidays are pretty useless.

18. Lee-Jackson day? What the hell kind of bullshit is that?!
Edited on Fri Jan-14-05 02:13 PM by tjdee
I never heard of that in my whole life, Lee-Jackson day. Did that come about after MLK day, or what?

on edit: And Confederate memorial day too?

And here we have, once again, another reason why I'm never leaving the NY/NJ area. Some parts of this country scare me.

22. A brief history and an editorial
Edited on Fri Jan-14-05 02:25 PM by underpants
Lee Day was established in 1889. Jackson was added to it in 1904 BUT there was no day off it was like "Peanut butter week" or something like that. The Sons of Confederate Veterans probably had some sort of ceremony but that was it.

Then the movement to honor Dr.King started. Well they resisted for a while and finally the concession was made to add Lee-Jackson to it, they couldn't give Dr.King his own day. So now we had Lee-Jackson-King day and no one liked it so the ever ingenuous former Gov.Gilmore split them up and now state employees get two days off.

23. Oh, I knew it was something like that.
:grr:

We shouldn't reward stupid behaviors/people. I agree with the editorial that Lee and Jackson were men of pretty good personal quality (it seems), but the day off only happened because people were hostile to MLK day. And they got it (at taxpayer expense).

Virginians should call them on that bullshit (though I bet the day off rocks!).

The Lee Jackson King day sounds even more ridiculous!

I am starting to see people based on more than one aspect of their personality--I'm trying to see the full person these days.

Even Republicans! I slag them alot, but I know some of them are doing their best to deal with raising their children, cars breaking down, whatever.

And actually I just took a guess on Jackson not being a cross burning racist, :silly: I know much more about Lee.

Lee, Jackson, King Day. I thought they meant Spike Lee, Jesse Jackson and Martin Luther King. Coming from CT, I couldn't fathom why they would honor two soldiers of the confederacy with Dr. King.

On edit: Kids and I are off Monday, Hubby has to go to NJ.

29. Yes. We take "those goofy holidays".
About ten years ago, right at his time of year, I was about to start a job back in Conn. So I say to the boss, "See you Monday... um, are you open?"

His reply: "Oh, we don't take those goofy holidays."

This was the man affectionately known to all as "the Little Dunce" (asked what a tabby cat was, what osteoporosis was, what Priority Mail was, etc.). Repuke, of course. :dunce:
