My kid just read a "Time for Kids" article on Dr. MLK and he's furious.
The article ends with Bush, last year, laying the wreath on Dr. King's grave. My kid LOST his mind. He is raging about "that warmonger" Bush visiting the grave of the "peace lover" MLK.

My son is homeschooled. Unlike the stereotypes perpetuated by many here, I am a liberal parent who is giving my son a liberal education in arts (and yes, he does the three Rs too). We have done a whole unit on Martin Luther King today. Monday, we will take part in our county's MLK celebrations. We are going to take the bus tour to important civil rights sites here.

Anyway, I just wanted to tell you how proud I am of my son.

Show the rest of our Country, for that matter.

14. I'm sick now.
It's true. Racism is alive and well in all its ugliness.

"why do they have special rights??"

"It's a sop to our A-A friends."

"Along comes a loud mouth communist who never held elective office and was a conscientious objector and certain people want him to have his special day."

"It is simply because he is black and it is a way to pacify the Jesse Jackson types of this world."

"It is what Little Stevie Wonder wanted. He dreamed it up one day when he and Ray Charles were playing tennis. Match was called Everlasting Love."

"PC, my dear. Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln are demoted to the Presidents' Day linen sales at the mall and nothing else, but our "chirdren" are taught all about the saintly Dr. King in every classroom in America and get the day off from school. What's wrong with this picture?"

"Why did Kalerfornee make Juneteenth a state holiday when it is a Texas Thing only?"

28. WOAH, I know that guy!
He's my "friend", William Creel aka Timothy Kasparian in GovSim. http://govsim.com .

He's a good guy, but just a bit misguided politically.

Our friend Jamie, who's moving heavily to the left also believes the day should be co-'d with Robert E. Lee as he was "against slavery".

10. I'm not sure when it is age appropriate but the "Eyes on the Prize" series
on PBS should be seen by all Kids.

I stumbled on it at around 11 and was shocked. I thought it was things that happened 100's of years ago. I was even more shocked when I found out this stuff was going on when my parents where young adults. (I was born in 1969)

It is fantastic. I might go to the office and pick it up for him to watch over the weekend.

I show it to my college students every semester, and they are speechless.

I'm raising my children in the same matter as you, except they attend public school. What they don't "learn" there, they learn at home. :)

9. I would prefer my son be in public school.
However, he was physically abused by a teacher's aide, against whom I filed charges, and then the next week he was tested for a "learning disability," even though he had the highest standardized testing grade in his grade.

The retribution against him, because I filed charges against the aide, was hurting him emotionally. I had to bring him home.

Oh, and there is that little matter about the mock election his class held. He told his social studies teacher that he was for Kerry, and she replied, "Kerry is a baby killer." (This has been told to me not only by my son, but by two other students who saw this.)

Anyway, I couldn't take the teachers lashing out at my kid anymore. He's home, he's happy, and he's learning. :-)

20. Good Lord.... The teacher actually said that????
Talk about poisoning children's minds. My cousin had a similar experience with her daughter, all though not sure where she heard it..... The little girl is 9. Asked her Mom who she was voting for and she said John Kerry. The little girl was horrified and said "Mom!!! He wants our soldiers to die and to take babies out of women's stomachs and kill them". My cousin (completely dumbfounded) stated that in no way does Senator Kerry want to do either of those things and that whoever told her that is very wrong. She's such a sweet little girl... broke my heart when my cousin told me this - I wanted to physically confront the mfer who put that in her head.

8. And wasn't he campaigning on that trip too?
He paid one brief visit to the grave, but spent a couple of days campaigning, if I recall correctly.

The "offical visit" to the grave meant the trip was paid for by taxpayers.

Good kid.

24. Are you a member of the homeschooling group?
Some DU homeschooler parents were discussing developing a Liberal Collective of Homeschooling Families. I really like this idea. There isn't very much out there for we liberals, as far as homeschooling groups. My goal would be to see a collective in each state. Wouldn't that be great!

He knows about the whole Pickering family, and despises the fact that Chip is his representative. He even worked in the campaign for Ronnie Shows, who Pickering defeated, thanks to the Republicans gerrymandering the districts.

22. I taught my daughter to use those things as TP
Time For Kids is pure propaganda and here in Maryland they actually expect the parents to pay for the school year's subscription. After reading some of the articles a few years back when my daughter was in 5th grade, I told the teacher that they were biased and propagandish and that if my daughter had to write a summary of the article, be prepared to read a total disection of it; with facts to back up the rebuttal of the piece.

But then, I am constantly having to give my kids the real story when it comes to "social studies" in MS and HS. It has benifitted them though, because they put their teachers to the test, something I strongly encourage, and they get great grades because it keeps them interested and they like the idea of putting ANY teacher to the test. <g>

I tried the Scholastics for Kids, too, but it was also propagandized.

I really would like a more objective news source, but I am having trouble finding one.

35. You're the source
:-)

If you think critically then, you, the parent, are the objective source.

Let them read anything, just be there to discuss it with them, stay engaged and they will learn to think critically too. Just make sure you keep yourself informed so you're a step ahead of the game.

That's what I do, anyway.

31. If you ever get a chance...
visit the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, TN. It's a little hard to find, but worth the visit.

Here's a link to their website:

http://www.civilrightsmuseum.org

"The emotional focus of the Museum and the historical climax of the exhibit is the Lorraine Motel, where Dr. King was assassinated. Dr. King's room can be viewed as it was on April 4, 1968."

34. I have one criticism of your home schooling program...
You're missing out on the best part of GWB's NCLB - spelling and grammar reform.

For example, you misspelled "education"(sic) in your article above - it is now spelled "edookashun".
Please make sure your pie is higher from now on. :)

36. And we're proud of your
son, also! My son is 13 now, and I remember when he was younger and I was teaching him about King and the civil rights movement. He just kept asking why they had separate places for blacks and whites in the south and what the big deal was, he wasn't satisfied with any explanation. He just couldn't understand it, the injustice of it was so simple to him.

And for those of you who thing homeschooling is only done by freepers and the religious right, that is not at all an accurate stereotype. Many, many homeschooling families are like Maddy, and they do an excellent job overall. There's nothing at all wrong with homeschooling if it's done right.
