It Was 50 Years Ago Today
That I first drew breath. My mother said she had been taking iron supplements prior to my birth, and I wasted no time eliminating a dark, tarry stool onto the doctor's white lab coat. To commemorate my birthday, I'm posting a quote from vastly underrated author - obscured in the shadow of luminaries of her time like Marcel Proust or Ezra Pound - and rebel, Natalie Barney:

'It seems to me that those who dare to rebel in every age are those who make life possible - it is the rebels who extend the boundary of right, little by little.'

1. Happy Birthday!
Actually, the dark, tarry stool is common in all newborns. It's called "meconium". It's created by the infant's intestines prior to birth.

3. Yes, It Is Common
Not so common to unload on the unwary doc, however.

25. Well it's not useless
if you've just had a baby and that knowledge keeps you from totally freaking out when you see TAR in their diaper.

I just never knew that until I was actually about to have a baby. So I was rather impressed!

28. The more serious problem
is that it often is released in utero and can be inhaled by the baby.

30. WOW
now I am doubly impressed.

Little Bouncy did that very thing. And inhaled the meconium. Repiratory distress, emergency procedures upon birth.

33. Heh heh
I love that I have that power.

I read a LOT about birth before doing it and was telling the nurse "Be sure to apply counter pressure to her head!! COUNTER pressure to her head!!!"

I know how to deliver a baby in an emergency, I bet you do, too.

I'm pathetic. Well, my giggy is quite far from you, so no fear.

I bet there are some closer to you right now than mine.

20. I Had an Unpleasant Experience with Drinking Ages
I joined the Navy just after my 18th birthday. My first assignment was school in Key West - and the drinking age in Florida was dropped from 21 to 18 while I was stationed there, which was great. I went on to Connecticut, where the drinking age was still 18 - so far, so good. When I was still 20, however, I got stationed in California, where the drinking age was 21. Bummer! However, I managed to circumvent these inconveniences, no problemo!

I lived in Portland from 1976-79. If the economy had been performing better when I got out of the Navy, I might still be there x(

26. Pretty Remarkable
coming from a Victorian-era woman. In recent years rebellious statements from women hardly raise an eyebrow, but in that era such words made heads spin! Living in Paris gave her the opportunity to live a more 'Bohemian' lifestyle than what was possible in the stodgy USA.
