What's a good whiskey?
I heard Maker's Mark was good -- but I don't even know what to look for in a whiskey. Any experts here?

23. Nope
Bourbon is a specific recipe made with a portion of the mash as corn-I think it's 60%. More and it's corn whiskey, less and it's not bourbon.

37. Usually but not always
Makers Mark, Van Winkel (I never heard of it before I did a search for "American whiskeys"), Wild Turkey and Jim Beam are bourbons. It must be 51-percent corn and aged for two years.

Jack Daniels and George Dickel are Tennessee whiskeys. Tennessee whiskey is charcoal filtered prior to aging, whereas bourbon is not.

Southern Comfort is a "whiskey liqueur" because it has sweeteners added to it.

66. No. To be called bourbon it must be made in Bourbon Co. KY.
That's why Jack Daniels is "Tennessee sippin' whisky".
And that's a fact!

69. NO True Bourbon is only made in Kentucky
Edited on Sun Jan-16-05 06:10 PM by amazona
This is why Jack Daniels, made in Tennessee, is not a Bourbon but instead a Tennessee Sipping Whiskey and a damn good one.

16. Well...TOP SHELF could be anything like 21 -year-old Glen Morgan
Which costs $40 a shot.

But for a night out I like Jameson Irish Whiskey.
For a Scotch it's a bit pricey but I like Glenmorangie SIngle MAlt Port wood finish I believe it's the 8 year I usually get.
Canadian Whiskey (rye) - I like Wiser's SPecial Blend

25. Maker's Mark is
about my favorite American whiskey, very smooth and rounded, yumm! Generally though I am a bit more of a single malt (as opposed to a blended) Scotch fan. Most of these can get pretty pricey so you need to be a little adventurous. Talisker is a very good one to start with, but for my money you just can't touvh the 15 year-old Laphroaig. Mind you this is the strongest flavored Scotch and is VERY smokey in flavor so a lot of people don't like it.

If you wanna live a little drink it straight with just a few drops of soft, cool water mixed in!

61. Too many to list.
Edited on Sun Jan-16-05 05:35 PM by whoisalhedges
Bourbon? Maker's Mark, Wild Turkey (anything distilled to 101 proof), Old Rip Van Winkle, Old Grandad, Old Crow (I get mocked for this, but it's my favorite cheap-ass sipper), A. H. Hirsch (expensive, but sublime), and the Beam small-batch bourbons: Basil Hayden's, Knob Creek, Baker's. There are other good bourbons, too, but this is a good list to start with. Maker's, Van Winkle, and Turkey 101 are in the sub-$20 range; Old Crow is about $10; and the Beam small batches are in the $30-$40 range. Hirsch is about $80.

Canadian whiskey? I prefer Tangle Ridge to Crown Royal, but both are very good. Look to spend $25-ish on a bottle.

Irish? The best, by far, is Middleton ($100). Of the more widely-available, less expensive brands, go with Jameson ($20-$25). The smaller-production, higher-priced Busmills whiskies are good; but the plain, white label stuff is crap. The less-commonly found Irish whiskies are hit-or-miss.

Blended scotch? Stick with Chivas or Johnnie Walker if you want a consistent product. About $20 or less.

I won't even go into single-malt Scotches, as there are many fine tipples made -- but they all have unique characters based upon the region and producer. It's really a personal preference thing with malts. A good malt will run you anywhere from $30-$300 per bottle -- choose wisely.

on edit: I can't believe I forgot rye whiskey, which is probably my favorite spirit. Old Overholt is fine for an inexpensive sipper, about $10. Wild Turkey makes a 101-proof rye for about $15, and Old Rip Van Winkle has a $25 rye that is simply sublime. The Van Winkle rye is probably the very best value, the best cost/quality ratio of any whiskey in the world today.
