4. If you do (I do), does it piss you off when other DU'ers talk bad
about red states, even though they know you're 'in the same boat'?

It sometimes bothers me, since I grew up in VA and have lived here my whole life. I'm glad that my home town and where I currently live voted for Kerry, so that makes me feel a little better. Plus, our governor is a Dem.

11. Not anymore. I now am so angry with the people in this state
that I will sometimes slam it without any provocation. Just for the record: I was born and raised in GA, lived in TX for about a year, and have lived in TN for 20+ years.

14. Same here, tnlefty.
It used to bother me a bit, but I have to remember the criticism isn't directed to me but to all Bush supporters. Bush carried Tenn with the rest of the south, but Kerry got plenty of votes here, the same way Bush got plenty of votes in Massachusettes. And like you, I'm very angry at so many of my fellow Tennesseeans for being so ignorant and stupid.

37. Not me.
I'll be the first to say let's end red state welfare. Farm programs were intended to help the little guy when in fact they've done just the opposite. Large farms have owners salivating at buying more land. Why? Because it will mean larger government farm payments. End it now. Let them get a taste of free-market capitalism at work.

Here at DU, I'm on the conservative end of the Bell Curve (95th percentile). In Texas, I'm practically a communist.

19. When you meet someone in the area that is liberal,
Do you think, just for an instant, that there is something wrong with them?

Empathy and reason seem like some sort of social disorders here.

27. Your last sentence
is SO damn true. It's so damn sad, too.

No, when I meet someone around here who is liberal, I think "HEY THEY'RE LIKE ME!!" and I resist the urge to suddenly hug them. I don't want to scare them off.

29. It is so unique to find someone not enamoured with Beloved Leader
I think the low point, or the point at which I realized fully what my community and peers were all about, was when the news started hitting about the bombs dropping on Baghdad.

My office erupted in cheers.

I was appalled.

31. My staff did, too.
And I was equally appalled.

I saw a girl in the mall today with a bush bashing shirt on. It had a picture of him and it said "Can you BELIEVE THIS SHIT?" I laughed so hard and I complimented her on it.

It's a bit lonely at times, even though my husband is liberal and a Democrat, too. And I have several close friends who are. But that's about it.

8. I live in the bluest state between the Appalachians and the Sierras!
"By thy rivers gently flowing, Illinois, Illinois,
O'er thy prairies verdant growing, Illinois, Illinois,
Comes an echo on the breeze.
Rustling through the leafy trees, and its mellow tones are these, Illinois, Illinois,
And its mellow tones are these, Illinois.

From a wilderness of prairies, Illinois, Illinois,
Straight thy way and never varies, Illinois, Illinois,
Till upon the inland sea,
Stands thy great commerical tree, turning all the world to thee, Illinois, Illinois,
Turning all the world to thee, Illinois.

When you heard your country calling, Illinois, Illinois,
Where the shot and shell were falling, Illinois, Illinois,
When the Southern host withdrew,
Pitting Gray against the Blue, There were none more brave than you, Illinois, Illinois,
There were none more brave than you, Illinois.

Not without thy wondrous story, Illinois, Illinois,
Can be writ the nation's glory, Illinois, Illinois,
On the record of thy years,
Abraham Lincoln's name appears, Grant and Logan, and our tears, Illinois, Illinois,
Grant and Logan, and our tears, Illinois."

Illinois

35. The county I live in
borders Jefferson County, the only "blue" county in all of East Texas. They almost went "red" this time but still stayed blue by just 1- or 2- percentage points. I think if Texas ever becomes a competitive state again and Dems are putting resources in here on the Presidential level Jefferson would be more solidly blue. There's a lot of apathy among Democrats in this state, especially slightly more Democratic (than the rest of the state at least) Southeast Texas, where I come from.

40. Same here basically...
I'm up in Morris. I find that it's mostly socially liberal (except in the red neck parts), but fiscally conservative. So um...yeah, it made no sense that anyone here voted for Bush. Basically, there's a lot of wealthy people that don't give a fuck who you fuck, but don't mess with their money.

50. I'm not sure...I do recall him making an ass out of himself though...
when he visited my AP History class in HS. He certainly underestimated the brain power of a bunch of smart 16-18 year olds...

Here are some questions and the answers he gave:

Student: Why did you become a politican?
Rodney: I thought I would be good at it.

Student: Why are you a Republican?
Rodney: My parents were Republican, and it's not good to disrepect your parents.

Student: What's your view on gay marriage?
Rodney: "I'm aware there are people living like that." (This was the point when I leaned to my purple, glittery friend Jayson and said, "I saw a shirt once that said 'Everytime a Republican dies, a queer angel gets their wings.'" This prompted the asst. principal sitting behind us to erupt into laughter.)

After this, the class basically proceeded to rip him a new one with questions that he clearly was not expecting from a class of HS students. Man, it was great going to a liberal HS.
