Tech Geeks...I have a problem I think. HELP
Okay, so the cd rom drive on my Pavilion desktop broke; it's still under warranty so HP sent me a new drive with instructions. It looks fairly easy to install, but in addition to the cd rom installation instructions, they sent instructions on replacing an optical drive. WTF? Are these two sets of instructions for the same thing, or am I missing something? I looked on the website, but no help. Tech support is outsourced, and I have a hell of a time getting the support person to understand what I mean. Either they're too smart, or I'm too stupid to explain. Is there something else I'm supposed to be installing here, or will the cd rom installation instructions do the trick?

1. Yes. To think is a problem. You'd be happier if you were unthinking sheep.
Nothing a lobotomy can't cure. :silly:

3. But an unthinking sheep can't install a cd rom drive.
I don't think so, anyway. Arghhhh.

2.  read both: the two sets should describe pretty much the same thing
If they do not, have a look at the replacement drive supplied and follow the instructions that seem to match the reality better.

4. Okay. Now for the stupid question.
Is a cd rom drive a type of optical drive? It looks like it from the instructions; kind of like a species and genus in computerland. It's confusing.

5. yes, it uses a laser
So it is an optical drive. There are several of those CD-readers and CD writers, DVD readers and DVD writers ...

The installation is pretty much the same for all of them.
