3. I've never tried to build one. Parts are too hard to find at good prices.

2. I don't, but Mr. Biased Liberal Media is in the process
of building me a newer, faster and better computer. Well, okay using my old harddrive, but we got a new power supply, motherboard, case. Only thing is it's saying the CPU isn't working right. He's checking it out, going to unhook everything and hook it all back up again. Any suggestions from other computer pros? Everything is pretty much brand-new, except the harddrive. We had to replace what we thought at first was the power supply because the computer stopped working for us, well it wasn't that. So then we thought, maybe it's the motherboard. Not that either. We decided to get a new case with a BRAND new power supply in it and it's still not working. He said the CPU was working and then all of a sudden it's not.

What gives??

LOL. I'm so computer illiterate, so please excuse me if this makes no sense. I'll pass along any information you can give me.

5. I'd check the memory to make sure it's compatible with the motherboard...
ther might also be some jumpers that need to be reset.

8. He's tried all the memory he has
which is a lot, they work with all the other computers (he's a computer freak I tell you). Doesn't understand it.

Thank you.

6. Make sure that any jumpers that
need to be set on the motherboard for the CPU are set correctly?

9. Make sure the FSB speed jumper is set correctly.
I've wasted a lot of time because I didn't check the jumper settings.

10. It worked fine before, it wasn't changed
he also said that motherboard was working before with the memory...isn't quite sure still.

Thank you very much for your help, I do appreciate it and so does he.

BTW, your name? Do you like Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck? Great book. :)

14. I've not read that one yet
I was born where Steinbeck was born too...so of course, I AM biased...LOL.

Of Mice & Men and East of Eden are another couple of favorites of mine. Grapes of Wrath tugs at my heart everytime I read it, sad thing is, it really happened, and it still happens to this day...but now more so towards Mexicans who immigrated to the US.

4. And I thought my husband was bad!
He put a lot of what you listed in his machine, but I know it isn't water cooled and no flat screen. He *did* think about it heavily, but I think he ran out of money. He has the Klipsch surround sound that he is pretty happy with. The speakers are on stands and everything! Anyway, it definitely kicks ass on games and downloads. It's good enough for me!

15. Unless you are willing to spend a grand or so every month, any box can
be considered archaic.

The socket set and memory I'm using are at the end, gonna have to upgrade again in another 6 months probably. I need to keep my nose out of PC forums and magazines.... I'm a computer junkie!

17. Mine's close
Just built it last month. Had to go through two different CPUs and two different mobos to get it stable:

AMD 3200+, 1 Gig DDR400 RAM, ATI Radeon X800 256 Meg, 300 Gig SATA drive, combo DVDR/CDRW drive. All in a really badass looking RAIDMAX Scorpio 668 case with 6 fans. Everything else is old and recycled from my old computer though.

20. That's going to scream!
I'm going to have to go to the 64 soon. I keep waiting for the prices to drop and the speed to get up there a little more. Sisoft Sandra has my box so close to the 64's that I can't justify spending the bucks yet.

22. Me...
Edited on Sat Jan-15-05 10:53 AM by CrownPrinceBandar
Nice system, BTW.

I built the PC I am using now about 2-2.5 years ago.

Here's the specs for DEEP THOUGHT:

ASUS P4S8X MoBo
P4 2.4GHz
512 MB SDRAM (*Gasp* ONLY 512!)
80GB Maxtor HD w/ Ultra ATA (bought it before Serial ATA was really affordable)
20GB Secondary HD of unknown origin
NVIDIA GeForce 5700 FX video
Creative Audigy 2 SC
Plextor 52/24/52 CD-R
Plextor DVD-ROM
19" Lite-On CRT (Want a flatscreen SOOO bad!!! - tired of having an electron gun pointed at my brain)
Logitech Wireless Keybd.
Microsoft 5-button Optical Trackball (hate MS, but I like 5-button mice)
OS: WIN 2000 Professional

I love my compy! It may be a bit long in the tooth, as far as PC's are concerned, but it still runs most of the programs and games (yes!) that I want it to. One of these days, I'm gonna build DEEP THOUGHT II, but only after I upgrade my monitor sitch.

edit: forgot a few things!

25. I did build mine
Athlon Xp 2800, Radeon 9800 Pro ... and I can't hear a sound.

Silenced case, silenced HD, silent CPU cooler, silent PSU, passive Graphics cooler, passive HD cooler...
All made by www.silentmax.de .

IMHO silent is more important than performance and my machine is quite powerful.

And: a two screen Eizo Flat Panel 19" setup :P .

26. Most of mine is budget recycled from my older computers...
AthlonXP 1.25 GHz, 256 DDR RAM, a 20 Gig hard drive(Maxtor) SB Live!, Nvidia GeForce4 64 MB, one DVD-ROM, and a CD-R/RW drive. OS: Linux Kernel 2.6.9 Debian Distro. I have never had a factory built computer, never trusted those much. Mine still runs most games and stuff, so I can't complain.
