Poll question: Are you a deliberate contrarian on DU? |
|
Do you sometimes argue just for the sake of arguing, or take a deliberately oppositional view in a thread? Do you sometimes hate 'conventional wisdom' and try to stand it on its head? Do you hate the idea of 'sacred cows'? I'm certainly guilty of that, now and then.

3. I wouldn't say I'm a contrarian |
|
but I've gotten into some arguments in my time here. I hate doing that, too. It always makes me feel like shit. After my latest argument I made a vow to make my posts more diplomatic if I see something I disagree with.

That's ridiculous.
No, really, I'm actually not like that. My beliefs may not always be popular, but for the most part, at least now that I'm older, everything I say is God's honest truth in my mind.

11. No, I pretty much believe everything I say. People find it contrarian, |
|
maybe, but I don't do say what I say just to disagree.
I think that some people find my views different than conventional leftist wisdom, but I focus more on leftist goals, particularly leftist environmental goals, than on traditional leftist dogmatic responses.

15. I don't know about DU. |
|
The story of my life: I've never given much time or weight to "conventional wisdom." I've always been outside the stream of convention.
I don't "hate." Sacred cows are fine, if they are MY sacred cows. ;-)
I have a reputation for being too blunt with my pov; as my boss has frequently announced in staff meetings: "__________________, why don't you tell us how you really feel?" Blunt to the point of insensitivity to the sensitive feelings of others.
I am actually quite a good devil's advocate, when I so choose. I can successfully argue a case from many "sides." I find myself doing that when a conversation seems out of balance; when the person I'm talking to is too literal, too black and white with no grey or nuance. Then I can enjoy deconstructing their sacred cows, even when that same cow is sacred to me as well.
