Best drumming in a rock song EVER?
Edited on Sat Jan-15-05 09:50 PM by BullGooseLoony
Not gonna pretend to know enough choices to make a poll...

But my personal pick is "In My Time of Dying" by Led Zeppellin...craziest drumming I've ever heard. High-hat's going the whole time...

What's your pick?

On edit: That's JOHN freakin' BONHAM, by the way....listening to it right now, too.

14. Alright, that was really good...
Some very intense parts, but it's really Hawaiian...is it mean to say that it sounds like any Hawaiian could do it?

I mean, it's definitely awesome drumming...but I just don't think it's as good...

Great pick, though. :)

The drums MADE that song, truly they did, but they weren't really all that great. I could have done the drum work on that and I suck.

61. I don't think so
Nothing personal, but if you do indeed suck, you can not play like the Mighty Max. He may be one of the most understated drummers in history, but he's also a force of nature. The guy takes a backseat to no one. He is just as adept at balls out rock as he is at big band swing. He'll play anything, and do it better than almost anyone.

...I made the decision to never learn a single Led Zeppelin song because everyone and their brother were trying to be John Bonham. I had nothing against Bonzo, in fact I was constantly amazed by his work, I just wanted to be different.

Instead I spend hour upon hour practicing to Hendrix and Cream. Baker and Mitchell did some incredible work.

That whole song...maybe it's not considered one of The Who's "greatest hits," but that ONE MOMENT when Daltrey sings "I don't suppose you would remember me, but I used to follow you back in '63" and Townshend SLAMS that fat, deadly chord and Moon is going berserk behind it...

Lots of other Who tracks, too many to mention, but Moon is my favorite rock drummer of all time.

75. I agree...
.... not only is Bruford a great "technical" drummer (for example he can keep several distinct rhythms going at once without breaking a sweat) but he also has a great feel, knows when to do something and when to lay back.

I'm going to give an Honorable Mention to Stewart Copeland, who is not as technically skilled but who has that creative ability that few percussionists seem to have.

I still mourn him.

It's hard to choose his best, as he was always doing something utterly fascinating and unique, but consider this: listen to what he does in "Won't Get Fooled Again" -- as the song, towards the end, drifts into the soft and somewhat monotonous Moog trance music -- it's Keith's job to, in a few seconds, take it from there, to that incredible explosive climax with Roger roaring and Pete body slamming those hammer chords. He aces it. It's quite an achievement.

Keith's drum were ALWAYS out front in The Who.

I loved the man. Still miss him.

59. Levon Helm - The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down
The drum and vocal tracks were done at the same time on a single take. The first one. It was supposed to be a throw-away track for the other musicians to use, but was perfect. I know most people are going to disagree with this choice, but a careful listen to the song just might change your mind. I remember when I first read about this in Modern Drummer a lot of years ago I said, "No way", so I put on the album and was blown away. Helm deserves much more credit than he gets when "greatest drummers" are discussed.

My second choice would be Bill Bruford's playing on King Crimson's "Neurotica." It completely boggles my mind everytime I hear it.

74. You mean, besides Peart on "The Spirit of Radio"?
And Peart on Red Sector A?

I vote for Roger Taylor on Queen's "Under Pressure."
