12. Well, be fair, we haven't had 2300 years yet |
|
Naturally they have more history. What were the Japanese like in 100 AD? This is not to deny the beauty and antiquity of Japanese culture, which I myself respect and admire, and I admit you can find a lot of ways in which we have always sucked and suck really bigtime now. But you should come back in 3920 and see how we stack up then.

The Japanese, up here in rural farm country, are highly, highly westernized. They tend to honor historical traditions during ceremonies...but hardly anytime else.

11. I speak French (second language), but chose German |
|
As a person of French descent I suppose I should like French more, but I just don't. German, Italian, or Spanish get my vote. Even Russian gets my vote over French. Though I say French literature beats all the rest of them put together :)

It's a pretty sounding language but most importantly it is a true window to the past. Icelandic is essentially the Norwegian spoken by the Vikings in the 10th century--as opposed to what modern Norwegians speak. Their language has been strongly influenced by closer contact with the rest of Europe. (Including a couple of stints as a colonial possession to both Sweden and Denmark)
