Mennonite Relief Services just impresses the hell out of me!
Edited on Mon Jan-17-05 05:00 PM by Cuban_Liberal
Just talked to two guys from here, both retired Mennonite carpenters, and they are going to the Tamil Nadu region of India to help rebuild several orphanges that were destroyed by the tsunami. These guys (and their wives) may be gone for as long as two years, and M.R.S. is paying all of their expenses, the entire cost of building materials AND wages for the local laborers involved.

For the record, M.R.S. uses 98 cents out of ever dollar for direct relief, one of the lowest overheads in the entire charitable-relief sector.

1. I live in Lancaster County, which is the home
of Mennonite Central Committee. When I gave money for tsunami relief, I chose MCC. They're great.

2. We have a lot here, as well.

We're the 'heart of Illinois' Amish country', which means a substantial number of Mennonites, as well. They hold an annual auction to raise money for their work, and it normally raises it excess of $125K, of which about $50K is used locally. They are one of the primary contributors to our food bank, our Civic Association (rent, utilities, medicine, glasses, etc.), and I think they're an amazing group of people. They do what the do quietly and without 'show', which I personally think is how Christ himself would have done it.

:)

they are truly amazing. I get a magazine from MCC (mennonite central committee) regularly about the work they do overseas, both in the areas of community development/relief and missions. They're a good example of what missions could and should look like in the Christian church.

On edit... visit http://www.mcc.org/ to learn more about them.
