I'll ignore the orange. I went to the University of South Carolina. I have an aversion to orange. It has something to do with being over-exposed to Clemson Orange through the years. Well, that and I'm a redhead and I don't look that great in orange!

13. Oh, goodie!
I glanced through the comments from last night's thread, and I just want to state that I think we need to keep it simple.

Let's just stick with a tie. Anything else appears "stalker-ish" (apologies to Crispini in advance! :) ).
No shirt, please - that's a little more, ah, personal - and we'd be really guessing about size, etc.

18. Okay--here are my votes--
In Group 1: Ties 2 & 4. We need to kill the one from bluefly--turns out the design is little tiny turkeys!

In Group 2: Ties 3, 7, 9, and 10.

I found one today that had little tiny parrots all over it. I know how much KO loves the "dead parrot" routine from Monty Python and immediately thought it would be perfect for him but unfortunately, the parrots all appeared to be alive, not dead--LOL.

It reminds me a lot of the bronze tie that he wears alot on-air. Some people think it looks orange on the air but I like it a lot and I notice that he wears that one on the air a lot. It seems to have a sort of sheen to it.

it looks an awful lot like the one Monica bought the Big Dawg.

But then again, if that's your intended message....

4.) My school colors are orange (see kid and dog picture above)

55. Not, actually. I'm not crazy about that gold. But I do like this one.
Check out the gold tie in this set. The gold is less shiny, and you don't have the small, regimented boxes that I'm afraid may pixillate on camera.

Actually, a couple of the ties in the family might go with his suits. Opinions?

I also like Patsy's selection of the Moschino tie with the little men on it. I don't like Keef in gold ties, too predictable, too bankerish, not snarky enough.

The Gold Neat is a good color combination that works well with many of KO's dark suits. And besides, the design works on TV.

60. hypothetical question
Let's say you were trying to describe the contents of the previous night's thread to your husband, being careful to emphasize that those other women were being crazy, and you explained that they were picking out ties for KO - but not you, you weren't the one voting for them, those other women were. And let's say you mentioned that the women were worried they would get a tie he could wear with the grey suit, and they hate that suit. And you made a Ken doll joke.

And then let's say there was a lull in the conversation and your husband suddenly gave you a piercing look, and asked "Do you hate the grey suit?" and you said "It doesn't matter to me what he wears" but there was a slight hesitation before you said it, on account of stopping to picture KO in the grey suit, and then in the dark suit.

If your husband looked at you accusingly and said "You hate the grey suit!" - what would you make of that?

Hypothetically, mind you.

"Well, as a matter of fact, I do hate the grey suit". And hypothetically, a full scale argument would probably have ensued.

I once had a boyfriend who refused to let me see any movie with Harrison Ford or George Clooney or any "hunk" in it. He couldn't stand it that I found other men attractive. The fragile, fragile egos on these men. . . .Seriously, we once stood in a line at the movie theater and argued for about 10 minutes about what we were going to see. We finally got to the ticket counter and the guy behind the window said, "Have you decided yet or do you need to argue some more?" BTW-we ended up seeing a movie that neither one of us wanted to see and that we totally proceeded to ignore while we necked like teenagers in the back row. :eyes: Okay, so maybe that wasn't the best example to bring up. . but see, an argument could possibly have reaped rich rewards for you later. Hypothetically, that is.

75. Back for a second, just peeking in...
I'd go with the red (not dead yet) parrot tie, though if it's for that greeny gray suit, maybe the blue version?

I don't love "Gold Neat," but I am more than willing to bow to the majority. I'm a Utilitarian at heart. :)

Bill's Monica tie is hideous, just as was that whole event. Bill, what were you thinking? And, I was right over here all along...

Love the Moschino logo http://www.raffaello-network.com/raffties/detail.php?itemid=27721&rangeid=343
And this one too: http://www.raffaello-network.com/raffties/detail.php?itemid=27717&rangeid=343
This was better in gold-ish-es (and sort of orange for election fraud, too, Rev. That was an excellent idea. Also, I loved the Python ties.)

This tie is gorgeous, very newscaster-y and Cavalli. Nothing wrong there. Nice find, Clark 2008! http://www.eu.forzieri.com/usa/product_view.asp?l=usa&c=null&dept_id=1&pf_id=rc01025-003&id_valore1=&id_valore2=&id_valore3=&id_valore4=&id_valore5=
I agree with the gold one here: http://www.josbank.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=1&Section_Id=1540&pcount=&Product_Id=228869

97. A short history of the purpose of neckties
In China, back in the B.C. times, warriors used neckties to protect their Adam’s Apple, from which they believed they got their power. In modern times, they are useful for hiding the Adam’s Apples of transvestites, but it should be noted that this is of no relevance to Mr. Olbermann.

In the middle ages, neckties were worn again by the military, to identify which regiment a soldier belonged to, much as women nowadays use a particular patterned necktie to mark individual newscasters as belonging to them.

But I'm shallow so I'm watching the Golden Globes. It should start to get interesting here pretty soon. They let them drink like fish at this award show so by about Hour 3, the acceptance speeches get to be pretty interesting.

118. We had a friend over last night and watched that.
Always amazing to see there are still a few breeds of dog you'd swear they're inventing, like maybe they had the Star Trek people stick some prostheses on a "regular" dog. That's a good KO picture. I think my fave is the one someone else described as him "just getting his snark on" -- he looks like he's just thought of a particularly juicy remark and is about to deliver it. It's not his most "handsome" photo -- the one you start the KOEB meetings with is probably that -- but it's so evocative of his personality.

130. Very cute
I knew a miniature Dachshund once named Napoleon. He was pretty sure he was in control, too. :)

Actually, if I had to choose I'd have to narrow it down between five breeds: Jack Russell, Beagle, French Bulldog, Boston Terrier or Standard Poodle.

For a little while, in a most Python-like fashion, I wanted an English Foxhound, a Harrier, and a Beagle, so it would be the same dog in three different sizes. I thought it would be fun and it would look nice.

I love the expressions on their faces. I know they're crazy (because they're terriers and all), but so what?

Here are some silly dog pictures. I don't know them, but they're cute. We have a cat, but I want a dog somethin' fierce.

The last one comes from a Japanese book of all kinds of dogs shot with a wide-angle lens. http://www.thedog-clubs.com/home.html

136. Baseball card story--
He's a reknowned baseball card collector. Apparently he has one of the finest collections in existence. He never played baseball other than I think he said one at-bat as a freshmen in high school. Anyway, he came across an entire set of baseball cards that had never been released. A baseball card company re-released them and as a bonus, let KO appear on several of the shots. He autographed a limited number and they come up on Ebay from time-to-time. Here's another pose from that same series:

You know what would *really* help? If the fashionistas would pick out, oh, say, the top 5 or 6 really swell choices, and maybe upload them all to photobucket, so we could see them all at once, and prepare a poll for Monday night? Post-KO?

I don't think anything will get decided before Monday anyway, since we're not all here. And, IMO, choices go faster if you trim them down and give people a bit less of a choice instead of too many choices. </cat-herder>

edit: fwiw, I like 'gold neat' myself, but I think several others are nice also. :7

edit again: but would we be able to tell, on-camera, that it was "our" tie? I'm not too sure about that....

151. the birthday tie with the grey suit?
Edited on Mon Jan-17-05 11:18 AM by lwfern
This is precisely why the tie needs to be shipped to one of us, not to KO directly. It must be embedded with the special sensor threads that will absorb the portion of the light spectrum covered in the grey suit - and only that portion of the light spectrum.

With the absorption of the additional light, the sensor threads will heat up if they come in contact with the grey suit. This will cause the tie to expand, ever so slightly, which will form a connection between two imperceptibly small switches, which issues a small shock.

Please tell me you guys thought that part through already.

154. the switches would have to be embedded in the gray suit
and if I had access to the gray suit, we wouldn't need anything so high-tech as sensor threads; a pair of scissors would do nicely. We may have to resort to abject begging or ugly threats; what's your preference? Or, we could rely on his fashion sense (oops, he owns the suit) or his sweetness of nature ('cause the man's never done a smart-ass thing in his life, right)?

These seem to be the ones most mentioned.

I am concerned that #4 and #8 may cause moire on TV. And am concerned that he may not wear #6, as it might be "promoting a brand".

Hey, I thought "gold neat" was gold with black, but it's actually gold with dark blue, isn't it? That makes it a lot more appealing to me... yeah, I'm a fan of the blue shirt.

I also think we should eliminate 4, 6, and 8 for the reasons you stated. I like 7, but the blue's a little on the light side for my taste.

I know I originally suggested #1, but now I'm wondering what those textures would look like on TV.

I'll put my vote on #5 (in the long length, those extra inches could come in handy and I know this tie comes in two lengths). If we're doing run-off voting, my second-place vote goes to #2 and then to #3, simply because I think those are most likely to mesh with what I remember about his wardrobe.

WRT paying for it, I'm a single woman (therefore answerable to nobody for what I buy) who is not in debt (therefore, it ain't gonna break me) and I wouldn't have any problem sticking it on my credit card. If folks felt like paypalling me a buck or two that'd be great, but it wouldn't be an issue either way. And, if someone else wanted to do the honors, that'd be fine by me, and I wouldn't mind paypalling them a buck or two. Or if there are alternate suggestions, that's fine too.

I realize there are internet trust issues here, but it's not like we're talking about huge sums of money, so I'm flexible. Besides, as someone who once flew out to California to meet up with a band of internet friends, :P I have my "trust" setting pretty high. I also have my "bullshit" detector set pretty high too, but the negative consequences of this working out -- the tie might not get there -- are not exactly earthshattering, so IMO, it's all good. :loveya:

185. Oh, lord, some of the things I have snowballed myself into over the years.
I'd be happy to go in on the cost of the tie. Why don't we agree on a simple message and then just say it's from the nightly review crew at DU... mostly harmless... mostly bonkers... geographically dispersed... whatever. I think the tie's going to have to go directly from the shop to MSNBC to get there in time, so the message shouldn't be too long; it'll just get munged.

and I would have told you sooner but DU is acting all kinds of weird.

I do not like Gold Neat at all, but I am more than willing to go with it if everyone chooses it. #2 needs to be in the other color, the grays (IMHO)

and as I've said, I love #6 and #7.

#1, not!, but if you have to, get the greeny gray one to go with that suit.

I also like my original #1 to go with that gg suit:

Other favorites. I haven't read this thread in its entirety yet, so I'll be back.

I still go for 'Gold Neat'. But I am stubborn that way. I also stuffed the ballot box!!!

Honestly, I think Gold Neat looks like something a hotel clerk would be forced to wear. The colorless one was safe and it's not my favorite.

I just found the DUPanic Room and I had no idea. There's a discussion in the lounge now about what happened and if it was happening again. They don't seem to know much either, but that's where I found the link to the DUPR.

198. we may a gender gap problem on the tie
I can understand why you think Gold Neat says, "Welcome to the Marriott" but Sparky seemed to like it. Could be that guys go for less adventurous ties that women do. And it's no good saying, "but my husband likes X," because maybe they wear the stuff we buy them because they've decided to suffer in silence!!

Gina

p.s. I must admit, I started liking the tie better when I realized the darker color in the tie is blue, not black. Makes it slightly less institutional.

As for the problems last night; no clue. Can't be a generalized problem but I'm not sure why last night/today would be a target date.

Since he reads the thread he will appreciate how much agida we have gone through in making a decision (and fun too). These bottom three moschino's are my faves so far. The one with the little men is most distinctive and recognizable on air, tres snarky. It is still my fave. Goes great with a
a dark suit too.

The light gray suit btw, is to be set on fire, and run over repeatedly with an all terrain vehicle. Not while he's wearing it of course. Maybe we can get perky girl to smuggle it out of wardrobe for us.

I also have a paypal account so whoever is doing this, pm me and I will send bucks.

#6 is fun but a bit too much of a statement. Don't like the exaggerated houndstooth. #8 is a nice pattern, don't like him in that color so much, that goes for 5 too.

Just to confuse things, I might go looking for some ties in awhile if I have the chance.

There is the issue of the tie incorporating the brand-name in its design being shown on a NEWS program on TV.

There is the tie with parrots. Would this be seen as promoting a particular British TV show (Monty Python)? Would/should there be an investigation relating to it?

These issues are worthy of discussion within a political forum.

with the "Hi, I work at a hotel" tie as my number 2 choice. We know he loves Monty Python. We know he tries to work in Parrot references whenever possible. It's red--okay, so red state is not a good thing where we're concerned, but it would be eyecatching on camera, and it does have blue in it so he could wear it with blue shirts, which we love. It's quirky and funny and he's quirky and funny and so are we. I just am so torn at this point. Gold neat or the Parrot tie?????

292. It was discussed both here and in the QuickTopics KO newsgroup
so it's possible he could have seen it in either place but I tend to think he's more likely to cruise DU than to cruise a topic forum devoted totally and solely on himself (at least I hope he's got better things to do than that). Anyway, yes, I do indeed think that it was a sort of shout-out to us or else someone on his staff saw it and was needling him about it and that's how/why it came up on air. I'm still blushing myself since I was the one who brought it up in the first place. I'm sorry but oral hygiene and white teeth (and non-smokers) are important to me. Of course, I do have a history of dating smokers though. . . .go figure.

294. Okay--I just read at the Quick Topics forum where someone who
knows someone who works on KO's staff (or else works for KO themselves--I haven't totally ruled that part out)--anyway, they say that his staff does indeed read the QT forum so I guess if they'd take their time to read that, then reading DU is probably totally within the realm of possibility. I was already about 99.9% sure that either he or his staff read DU because they just pick up on too much of the same topics that we talk about and do such a fine, outstanding job of covering news that the rest of the MSM is afraid too (yes, I'm sucking up here). Again--if anyone on his staff is reading this-please weigh in when we post our poll later on the tie choices. That is all!

This is a democracy. We are going to vote. He gets one vote, and can vote against parrots if he wants. He can campaign against parrots, and try to bring others around to his way of thinking, but he must come up with some compelling arguments.

310. I don't know if Sparky's got any but I have one
I don't recall seeing Keith in a red tie. Maybe he's got one, but he hasn't worn it often enough to stick in my mind, which tells me he may not be too enamored of the color. I think the parrot tie is cute, but I'm not sure I want to go with "cute", especially given the background color choices. And it's a little on the garish side, close up.

Bunny, I think, argues for the parrot tie on the grounds that it's snarky and KO should have some clothing with a little attitude. I'd say almost the opposite. To me, it's funnier for KO to be dressed like a "normal" boring newscaster and be snarky. And really, despite all the snarky humor in Countdown, it's got a higher signal/noise ratio than the network news broadcasts, IMHO, because Keith is willing to ask the awkward questions that others tend to skirt around. He jokes around, but he's doing a professional job with the news, and I don't think the parrot tie looks professional.

Ok, on the offchance they are around, I'll have to work this into the next few KOEB threads: I wish they would freakin cover the DNC race, and in some depth too. I know about Dean, Frost, and Rosenberg, but I don't know BOO about the others. Some footage from one of the DNC regional chat sessions would be most welcome, so I'd know who to nag my DNC members for. There is, after all, only so much one can find out on the internet.

Or, it'd be a good blog topic for him.

Ooo, they should cover that inaugural mylar balloon thingy. That was hysterical.

I know we did, four years ago, although I can't recall what we did do. The munchkin was only a couple of months old at the time, though, so I was still in that breastfeeding-around-the-clock-what-is-this-thing-you-call-sleep phase of mommyhood. I have the general impression, though, that it's a LOT more security than they used for the last inauguration, and I don't think that has a damned thing to do with 9/11. I think * realizes he's not wanted and is getting paranoid about assassination attempts. Hell, for all I know, there are kooks out there that have actually made threats, although I haven't heard any whispers to that effect.

It IS a vitally important issue- "Which direction will the Democratic party go in the immediate future?" And something that is difficult (impossible) to get info. from TV/MSM. Very worthy of attention and coverage.

Seriously, we have no idea who dips in, nor how deeply they drink. Maybe they read every single entry every night (doubt it). Maybe they skim a few times a week, or after certain hot topics are covered, or when staffer X has the time to spare. Doesn't really matter. We should talk about what we want to talk about. If they want to eavesdrop, they can take the rough with the smooth; that's the fate of any eavesdropper. 'Sides, I think they've already figured out that we know how to play rough. }(

320. More on the Quick Topics thread. Apparently KO was not happy with our
swooning and such here on DU over him. The source says that they believe that he thinks we focus too much on the swooning and not enough on his talents as a journalist. Of course the reason why we love him so much is that he DOES cover the stories that no one else will and covers them in-depth and because he does ask the hard questions. And well, he has William Hung and Michael Musto on regularly. What's not to love? It just doesn't happen to hurt any that he's easy on the eye, snarky, and funny as hell. Jesus-aren't men ever happy? They bitch if you don't pay them any attention and then they bitch if you do. Okay KO--we get it--you're a serious, intelligent guy and you are indeed very much appreciated for your journalistic talents. Speaking solely for myself, I'll try not to floaty-heart you so much in future posts. And again, feel free to weigh in on the tie choice.

I can't imagine KO reading through these threads everynight.

325. Don't know really how reliable they are but so far they haven't posted
anything really scandalous or unbelievable. They seem sincere. But of course, once you've learned to fake sincerity, the rest is easy, right?

326. well, if it is true, look at it this way...
You do a good presentation for a meeting at work and most the feedback you get consists of comments on your personal appearance, sexual attractiveness, and sense of humor. How do you feel? Granted, we aren't his co-workers, but still... maybe he wants to be treated as a journalist and not as a celebrity.

329. Well, you make a good point, BUT,
here's the diff: I'd never write anything similar to our threads in any letter directly to Countdown or KO -- and I can't believe Catchawave's been sending them, LOL. We are, of course, all here to enjoy the mad news skillz of Countdown and KO, but we are ALSO all here to have a nice drinky, let our hair down, rewind and relax after a long day, and hang out and gossip with our silly internet girlfriends. Real, substantial critiquing of other people's work? That's no fun, and anyhoo, I get paid for dat shit!

331. We are talking this stuff AMONGST OURSELVES!
We don't send silly stuff to KO. We yack once a day (and for 4 days over a tie), I think as relief from the serious issues we deal with most of the time... it's a way of blowing off a little steam and having some laughs together. It is NOT INTENDED for KO or his staff, and is not a message to them.

Most of our yacks happen during commercials while we WATCH the show, and discuss the issues he discusses. We watch BECAUSE of the issues he covers. The fact that he is appealing and snarky is just an extra, it's not WHY we watch.

and, if they don't like it, we can all turn our TV sets off. Also, someone please remind him that he used to be a sportscaster. Another thing, I'm not sure it's just that the people on QT don't like us. And want us to stop stealing their act.

KO, we do watch you for the news. We even watch when you're not on. So, there. And, which tie is it? :)

And wouldn't it be funny if it were in fact QT people playing head games with us? OMG, I *love* the internets. This shit is so much more fun than soap operas.

Edit: Should I skip my HOA meeting tonight and hang out with ya'll? I feel verrrrry lazy.............

332. and there's part of the problem
we didn't know that a pointer to the threads was being sent to Countdown, which was, in effect, an invitation. That may have given the false impression that this was a place to get the sort of remarks that are made to your face in the conference room. In reality, it's closer to the sort of remarks you hear in the ladies room between sessions. :-)

Maybe we could cut back on the floaties just a little and strive for a balance... say the sort of stuff you talk about at a semi-working lunch with co-workers you really enjoy... part serious, part silly?? It might get a few more of the guys back into the game on a regular basis. They're fun to have around, but once the floaties get above a certain level, we might as well be talking about tampons... the guys scatter like cockroaches...

335. Mmmmmm....NO.
When I talk here, I am talking to the Duers that are participants in the thread.

Anybody who doesn't like what we write doesn't have to read it, but I won't edit my comments for the whole outside world. Nor do I care if certain people scatter. We even had two concurrent threads one time... one with floaties, and one without. It was fun to visit both.

I am not huge with posting the floaties myownself, but I sure have gotten a thousand well-needed laughs outta these threads. Fun now & then to have a little adult female fun.

If the pointer thread caused 'em to think the thread was silly, SO WHAT? I'm sure they'll stop reading KOEB thread and move on to the more serious political threads that we post all over the place.

I don't care to change my behavior until the Mods of this site say I must. Aint done anything wrong, just having some humorous fun and blowing off some steam, which I think we very much need. Beats the damned ugly "bashing threads"!

338. Adult women. LOL.
I love the KOEB threads, but the thing they remind me most strongly of is passing notes in study hall in eighth grade.

I do care if the guys scatter because I value their input. As much as I like the KOEB threads, I think the Countdown threads were the most fun back when we were in the Election forum and everybody played. Some nights, bleever and Sparky and a few of the other guys drop by, but it seems like they don't stay long on those nights when the hearts are flying the thickest. Our loss, not just theirs, because those guys are funny, too -- and frankly, the funniest stuff I remember from last week isn't swooning, but somebody calling Chertoff "Nosferatu" and Crispini saying, "give that man a sandwich". And, of course, Bunny perpetually running up and down the stairs. Now there's a dedicated blogger!

As for the Countdown staff, the more I think about that, the funnier it gets. On the one side is KO (or a proxy) who comes to the KOEB thread because it's the only place in DU specifically talking about his broadcast every night, only to find the thread awash in giggling schoolgirls. On the other side are the "swooners" -- women who have made thoughtful, moving posts in other forums who seem determined to wear their most vacuous faces in the one place their idol is most likely to see their words on a regular basis! It's like something out of Gilbert and Sullivan.

And no, I don't think we should banish all floaties and start publishing nightly theses on political events of the day. I just wish it didn't look like we were having a contest to see who has the best Christmas lights on the block. Then again, I also get tired of the puking smilies, so I may just be suffering from graphics overload.

339. Battle Plan/Potluck
Titling our threads the estrogen brigade might not be the best way to lure the menfolk back. Don't get me wrong, I think it's funny as hell, but maybe we should try something else for a while.

KOTB? (testosterone?) We could try it out for a night. We'd have to act all manly, maybe instead of posting floaty hearts we could grunt occasionally. And belch ... I dunno, I forget what all men do in groups.

The poker references are good, I say we keep them. Instead of trashing the women that Keith interviews, which I seem to notice a lot of lately, we could randomly interject: She's hot, I'd do her.

And let's talk about sports a bit more. KO likes everything to be a sports metaphor - so if you talk about the condi hearings, you use sports words more, like "he really gave her a pummeling" (is that right? maybe that sounds like vaulting/gymnastics ... too girly). Alright, you all would have to handle that, I can't do sports. I'll occasionally comment on how people salute, and Clark2008's boy can back me up. I'm also good for some snippy foreign policy remarks. What all can you guys contribute?
