10. The word "Pumpernickel"
comes from the French phrase, "bon pour Nicole", which means "good for Nicole"

Nicole was a horse that a member of French royalty rode.

The bread was accidentally made by a bread maker when he/she used sugar that got too close to the open fire oven and burned. The resulting loaf was brown in color.

So they fed it to Nicole, the royal horse, and she dug it.

Seriously.

31. The Pentagon
is the site of the original National Airport in DC. It was called Hoover field back then. The location wasn't very good, and the main runway lined up with the Washington Monument, so planes had to maneuver adroitly to avoid it. June 16, 1942 the new National Airport opened, freeing up a convenient place to construct a huge new office building for the military.

38. The tradition of crowning the Inaugural Ball King and Queen...
The tradition of crowning the Inaugural Ball King and Queen proved awkward in 1857, when a count of the votes ended up pairing bachelor president James Buchanan with vice president John Breckinridge. The new president ordered everyone present to cover their eyes while the two performed the traditional dance. 14 people peeked through their fingers and were later shot.

39. Most of the arrowheads that people have hanging on their walls...
are what the Indian flintknappers threw away as junk. They have flaws, so they were never finished, but were thrown on the ground as junk.

Archaeologists call them "preforms."

And that stuff--the flakes--that gets knocked off during arrowhead production is called "debitage" by archaeologists. It can tell you about the methods that were used to produce the projectile point. Indeed, most arrowhead hunters leave the debitage behind when they find points, which is sad, because if they would pick it all up and save it, they could learn more about the points they collect.

There is only one state in the US, entirely surrounded by other states, in which you can travel to by heading straight south from some part of the bordering states.

From Benton County you can reach Oklahoma, Little River leads to Texas, Ashley to Louisiana, Phillips to Mississippi, Mississippi County to Tennessee, and Clay County to Missouri. It was a final Jeopardy question once, but I knew it because it is my home state.

82. The phrase "the whole nine yards" originated from pilots in WW2.
Edited on Tue Jan-18-05 03:30 PM by Worst Username Ever
The machine guns mounted in the wings of fighters were fed by belts of ammunition 9 feet long. If you went all-out on a target and gave is the entire belt of ammo, you were said to have "given it the whole nine yards."

Called the Four Corners, you can touch Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah all at the same time.

87. Did you know.....
George Washington was the first president under the US constitution of 1789. However, the US was an independent nation for 13 years before the Constitution was signed. For one year during this time John Hanson served as "President of the US in Congress assembled." Technically, he was the first president of the United States.
