What foreign films have you seen lately? |
|
I just finished "The Barbarian Invasions" and really really liked it. Also have recently seen and liked:
Monsieur Ibrahim (Omar Sharif, need I say more?) Amelie Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter...and Spring The Housekeeper Cuckoo Kolya
and a few others that I'm sure I'll remember in a few.
Anyone have any recommendations?

2. On Love, by a famous French director. HORRIBLE. |
|
I am consciously blocking out that film by that French director...oh what's his name, he's very famous. The box said "One of the year's ten best" or some nonsense, and it was very, very bad.
And I like foreign films. Sometimes I even like French films. But this one :puke: .
For foreign films I like Wim Wenders, particularly Wings of Desire or Until the End of the World (which has a great soundtrack). There are more, can't think of any right now. :)

8. Do you like Werner Herzog? |
|
He's one of my faves. Along with Fellini of course.

I pick up foreign films quite randomly--I don't know who's good, or who's not so good until I take a chance on it.
Which films has Herzog done?

He's kind of a nut, but his films are beautiful. I'd start with "Aguirre The Wrath of God" and move on to "Fitzcaraldo". Not positive about the spelling of his film titles, but I'm pretty close. All his movies are incredible. They may be somewhat hard to find. "Heart of Glass" is great as is "Even Dwarfs Started Small". Do a search for him on the internet. I've found several interviews with him that tare fascinating.

was City Of God. We do not get ferrin films here in the heartland. Our theaters wouldn't even show Shakespeare in Love thinking it was not of interest to the community.

-- CITY OF GOD
-- Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN
-- WILD ZERO, a totally demented and gleefully trashy and schlocky Japanese zombie flick featuring punk band Guitar Wolf
-- BIG GIRLS DON'T CRY, a German film about two high school girls
-- IN JULY, a sappy and light-hearted romantic comedy, also from Germany. If it had been an American film, it would have been in every local suburban multiplex all over the country. But it was restricted to film festivals and art houses only because it's "furrin."
-- CHRISTIANE F., a 1982 film about teenage junkies in Berlin

is an excellent one. Great mix of genres, its part period piece, mystery and Hong King cinema all rolled into one. Heron was another excellent film along with the Emperor and the Assassin. Right now I am old school and going through Akira Kurosawa's catalog. The man was a genius.

An Affair Of Love "Released in France under the title "Un Affaire Pornographique," this subtle romantic drama tightly focuses on a man and woman who meet to satisfy a peculiar sexual need and find themselves becoming more intimate than they ever wanted."
