I wanted to update you nice people on my brother-in-law |
|
We got a second call at 12:45 last night. My sister-in-law (his wife) found out he has a compound fracture of the right femur and his right knee is pretty messed up (no details on that). He also has assorted other minor injuries. They are performing surgery on his leg to put it in some kind of brace/put pins in it. I don't really understand all that, maybe someone here knows what that is about?
While a compound fracture (youch!!!) is extremely painful, I am grateful his injuries weren't life-threatening.
We still don't know how it happened. I remember when my husband was hurt during Desert Storm, we had to wait until we heard from HIM (when he was finally in an Army hospital in Germany) to find out what happened. That might be the case here, too. I'm just happy knowing the horrible scenarios going through my head last night aren't true.
How long is this damn war supposed to last? I'm now hoping he needs weeks and weeks (maybe months and months) of physical therapy. He is infantry, so, while legs are important to anyone, they are of extreme importance to someone like him.
Thanks for your positive vibes and hugs last night. That was very scary. I hate this war. Hate it hate it hate it hate it. So does Scott, actually (he voted for Kerry!!!).

1. Well thank goodness he is ok! |
|
If I'm not mistaken, compound fractures do take quite a while to recover from. Ouch is right....I can't imagine how that must feel..Just the thought gives you goosebumps. Thanks for the update!

that his injuries were not more serious than they are and that you were able to find out rather quickly. I bet those hours felt like days though.

6. Thanks for the update, BB |
|
I was up much of the night with a feverish toddler, so I had much time to think of you and your family. Kept my feelings of self-pity in check (yeah, I'm not sleeping, but at least it's not for the same reason that BB isn't sleeping!).
 to you this morning. I hope the news continues to get better.

aren't life-threatening.
I hope his rehabilitation takes as long as the war, and that he never makes it back to Iraq.

They are going to put a plate with screws in the femur so that the multiple fracture sites can heal...they literally drill through the bone to do this.
The knee (if messed up enough) MAY keep him out...cross your fingers.

17. Well thank goodness. I thought about him quite a bit last night. |
|
I am sorry for his injury but hopefully all will mend well. He cannot possibly go back to infantry work.
I hope they send him home to recover!

20. Oh, that's good news, such as it is, |
|
isn't it? I mean, I know it's not *good* news, but you know. Thankfully it wasn't something worse. I mean it sounds like it might hurt like hell and be a long process of healing, but still . . .
Hugs to you and your family, BB.

Your family was on my mind all day. I'm happy for all of you that it's not anything worse.
This should keep him out for a long time and depending on the extent of knee damage he may not be able to return at all. In a way that's a bit of good news from it all.
