KOEB New Tie Thread
Because we need to focus!

Link to old tie poll:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x2454839

I also move that the folks who have said they will contribute get a weighted proportion of the votes. That's fair, don't you guys think? So far they are:

Catchawave
Shopaholic
MiamiLiberal
RevCheesehead
gkhouston
TroubleInWinter
Clark2008
crispini
(Patsy, I don't have you on the list, but I'm assuming you're in.)

Anyone else?

I also move that we set a deadline, maybe today? Or Friday? (We can't buy anything tomorrow, don't forget.)

Thoughts?

2nd runner up-Blue Moschino (spelling?) Blockhead Tie

PM the rest of 'em Houston and Crispini and see if you can round 'em up and get them to reply on this. LOL we are all Dems or Independents aren't we--ask us to decide on one simple thing and we'll drag it out as long as possible and then give you 10 different answers for our final answer! Or discuss our choices and the reasons why in-depth! :hi:

4. bunny said last night
Promise me ladies, you will not let the ORANGE tie be chosen. I can live with the gold one, dull 'welcome to the Marriot' that it is, but never the orange one (or the first striped one either).

on edit....I'm still holding out for the snarky little men tie, the blue parrot, or my blueish snarky stripe choice.

in a different message, she later acknowledged that her blueish snarky stripe might not come across well on screen

5. and I'm still voting for
Gold Neat (Welcome to the Marriott)

followed by Orange Stripe

I like the little men, but it doesn't come in the longer length, which I think Keith could use, and I think he'd do better with a non-blue tie; something to contrast with his suits/shirts.

Edited on Wed Jan-19-05 02:53 PM by Shopaholic
Sorry, I just hate the color. My first choice was Gold Neat but since most of y'all didn't like it, I have now officially changed my vote to Blue Parrot (I like the blue Blockhead Maschino tie too). However, I'm willing to go along with whatever the majority goes for just so long as it is NOT the Orange thing. I'm with Bunny on this one all the way. We also need to make sure that whatever vendor we chose to buy it from can send it express. I know that Jos A Bank could, I don't know about the rest.

That blue just doesn't go with Keith's suits or shirts that well. I know I'm not a Virgo, but can I pretend to be one while Bunny's not around?

22. The little men, that's my vote
Hate (and I can't stress how strongly I mean this) that f'n Gold tie. I would go with bunny's stripe, or the the blue parrots in a minute -- and I still like my houndstooth, although no one else does.

The orange tie is right out. I love the symbolism, but I think it's stupid to buy a tie that he can't wear with that green/grey suit: as that's the one that seems to be the problem. I do love orange in general though, don't get me wrong.

There you have it. I will certainly pitch in, just let me know how and when. Also, if you can't do it, I'll put it on my card.

choice. Maybe we need to ask how many really hate the blue parrot; how many really hate the gold/neat; how many really hate the orange-dayglo and the blue blockhead. Maybe that's the best way to do it--eliminate what we hate the most. I hate the orange tie the most.

I'm torn between the Gold Neat and the one bunny posted. Either of the two will do for me. I don't like the orange or the one with the parrots at all.

Who's writing the note? I'm not creative so my input would be useless. :)

it's just that we started talking about ties Friday night and I'm resistant to cranking up another round of it, especially with his birthday only a week off. As I said in another thread, I spent less time than this picking out my wedding dress!

Also, KO doesn't seem to wear big, obvious patterns much, something else that got discussed at some point over the weekend, I think. God knows we talked about EVERYTHING else...

Also, with much work to do, I'm not sure I'll be around for the Meeting. Perhaps I'll cehck in from work, but there will be no KO on my TV.

George W. Bush wanted four more years, and he's about to get it.
With a Republican controlled Congress, will he get what he wants, or will the devil that hobbles so many second terms get him, possibly in the visage of the very real, and ongoing ... war in Iraq?
Regardless, tomorrow is unquestionably the President's day -- when he forever banishes the first-term ghost of his father's presidency and claims a mandate to reform taxes and fix social security, even though the mandate is unclear and consensus on those hot-button issues uncertain.
And will we hear more religious references than ever, in a nod to the religious right so crucial to his election? And will the President simultaneously try to set a tone of inclusion?

35. Gold Neat is on sale for $35.
We have 11 contributors so far. Just an FYI - if "Gold Neat," we'd have more than enough if each person chipped in $3 or $4, for some of the $50 ties we'd probably need to go to $5.

Just pointing that out.

66. go for a longer version then but bear in mind
this is something we may be entering on an electronic form that the merchant will print out... there may be a length limit. Let's have two versions, just in case.

I'm okay with spelling out DU... but I'm pretty sure he knows where the tie is coming from now... and which one it's going to be. If we were truly evil, we'd be PM'ing each other like mad underneath the surface and picking out something completely different!!!

I was specifically going for nonstalkerish, in an attempt to portray us you all as not too gushy. But still something that would give him a nice ego-boost. I figured he knows we know he's smart, but it would be good to let him know we recognize he's compassionate and integrified integritous full of integrity. I think he might appreciate that more. :D

62. Intelligence--need to put that first
We need to mention that at the very beginning-and something about how we appreciate he doesn't dumb down our news (okay--except for Oddball & Keeping Tabs). Maybe describe him as TV for People who Think and Want Real Answers to their Questions or some such something. The man writes like 99% of his show--we need to give him props for all of his hard work. It's smart, funny, and insightful, all at once. Can't let any of that go without mention!

68. I respectfully disagree
the man's plenty bright, he's head and shoulders above the rest of the MSM when it comes to having smarts and being willing to use them, and I do admire that, but I'd still put his compassion first (and no, those weren't my words originally). I see plenty of intelligence every day. Compassion's a lot harder to come by and to hold to, especially when you're as smart as he as and doubly aware of all the wickedness in the world.

How about just "Thank you for your great news coverage." ?

Or just, how about,

"Happy birthday, from your viewers at Democratic Underground"

It has the merit of being EXTREMELY simple. :)

73. In-Depth Analysis of KO Ties
Edited on Wed Jan-19-05 03:48 PM by Shopaholic
Okay--all I have to go from is the pics or video files that I have saved on my harddrive or those on a friend's photobucket website. Here's what my research revealed regarding KO's choice of tie attire:

1-Brown/Tan Stripe tie

2-Red small print (either geometric or floral couldn't tell-very subtle pattern)

3-Grey/Black stripe tie (looks like the cousin to the brown/tan stripe tie)

4-The Gold/bronze tie he wore last night-some thought it was orangey
but it's got a blue, very subtle geometric pattern in it

5-Pale blue/with grey-again in a subtle geometric or floral pattern-the pattern was very subtle so I really couldn't tell what the pattern was on it

6-Grey shiny floral print with blue (again a subtle print)

7-Grey floral print with blue (hate this one because he wears it with the damned light grey suit that must die)

8-Purple tie (looks like it might be stripe on stripe--again, subtle)

9-Tan floral tie--last seen in approximately 2003! It was a really wild print (I posted it earlier--it has not made a recent appearance).

It would seem that he really doesn't not prefer anything really wild on camera, #9 notwithstanding! All the prints were really subtle and even the stripes weren't anything too flashy--no more than two colors and not in a really large stripe pattern either. And now I really have to go back to work or I'm going to be one of the millions unemployed under this president's administration!

But if I don't get back to work I'm not going to have a job to be able to afford to buy my own clothes let alone KO's!

142. One word of caution
We've got to be prepared that even after all of our efforts, KO might not ever wear the tie on the air when he does get it. I worked in TV for several years and I can remember one consultant telling the on-air talent not to wear gifts from fans on air because we didn't want to send them any messages or anything or to directly acknowledge fan contacts other than to respond with the standard "thank you for watching letter" or a publicity photo or the like. And he might even be cautious about wearing it on-air because we'd probably collectively freak out if he did and since the Repugs monitor these boards I can just imagine Sludge or the like getting a hold of our posts and proclaiming, "MSNBC anchorman wears gift from "radical" DU'ers" or some such bullshit. Hate to be a party-pooper, and I still absolutely want to do this, but wanted to make sure to point all of this out so there are no disappointed among us if we never actually see the tie on-air or anything.

145. Yes, I totally agree.
I thought about this a few days ago, actually. Which I'm quite sure is true for KO since from what I have heard he had a stalker incident. So the probability that he will not wear it on-air, ever, is pretty high.

Which actually makes me think -- although of course we have progressed quite a long way down the tie road -- it does seem a shame that we aren't getting him something that he could actually USE.

Maybe we should get him a mug or something. I know that in my little office-bound coffee-lovin world, one can never have enough mugs. They even have DU mugs in the cafe press store.... the cafe press store mugs are quite nice, I have several.

(Ok, ya'll, don't hit me for this suggestion for a radical change of direction. Ow! Ow! I said don't hit me! Heh heh heh heh heh. It's all about the journey! LOL.)

Have you guys thought of using DU's donation button (like we did for Kephar's funeral?) Maybe Skinner will help us? It is a DU project, and I'm sure we're all donors, though it would cost each a dollar, is there a fee at Pay Pal?

Sorry for the babble....just thinking aloud.

Also, I'll go along with the majority for the tie selection, as my fav, the blue/gray stripey thing is going to lose anyhow:nopity:

I'll stay tuned for updates...and further instructions....:D

150. OK, we can make this work - Operation Cry Wolf
We use psyops.

Phase 1: Counterintelligence. Immediately shift to private messaging for tie selection. New selections, new tie.

Phase 2: The red herring. Monday night, the show starts. Once KO appears, first person to see him posts "He's wearing our tie!" Reaction is critical. There must be much (manly) squealing.

Phase 3: Freepers react, incident is blown out of proportion. We unconvincingly deny. They accuse. Eventually video is produced from a year prior, showing the tie is, in fact, an old one.

Phase 4: We repeat this cycle several times, until the freepers lose interest.

Phase 5: He wears the tie.

(Note: this plan will be even better if we buy him a duplicate of a tie he already owns. It will be undetectable.)

However, if he did wear it (wink, wink - if you're watching Keith) we could always keep our delight a secret by using a code word that we could, perhaps, PM to each other in advance... ;)

it isn't yours. The tie's getting ordered tonight if I have to order it myself; enough is enough. Crispini and I PM'ed a little on a message; still not firm on that. I liked lwfern's snark from earlier this afternoon but Crispi is concerned that the merchant might goof it up; also she's not sure we should snark someone we don't really know.

Does anybody else care enough to comment? I'm getting a migraine so I'll apologize in advance for my progressively shortening fuse.

1. The original footnote.
2. A second footnote which says "we don't really believe the first footnote, but we didn't want to come off as stalkerish like we've invented an entire personality to go with your new tie."

(possibly a third footnote)
3. Also, be advised that some people don't like this tie, and if it looks like we're gunning for you to get fired and clerk at a Marriott, it's not because we've imagined you as a having a hotel clerk personality.

wait, hang on, now we need:

4. Not that you couldn't handle that job, or that we specifically wouldn't want to see you in a hotel.

hmmmmmm. That might be too long, eh?

end of this, so it's not really your decision to make. I believe it was cripini, bunny and patsy who first started the "tie" conversation, so I will defer to them.

However, I must point out, dear, that you're getting pushy. You're causing alarm bells to go off in several peoples' minds (I have the PMs to prove it, but I will not name names) and if you persist in bossing us around, you might have to order your own tie, anyway.

I hate to be brash and condescending, but throughout this whole thread you have been arrogant in the push of YOUR choices and too aggressive in your missive to co-opt the note. This is supposed to be a group effort, not the Gina effort.

Please take into consideration other peoples' opinions and tastes.

And, if I'm entirely missing the point of your posts, poop on me. I don't think I am, though.

I'm just trying to get the tie *ordered*. His birthday's in a week and it takes a nonzero amount of time for things to happen and people are sort of standing around saying, "so are we gonna do something" and I got tired of the indecisiveness and milling around.

I know you liked the orange tie. A lot. Unfortunately, a lot of other people disliked it just as much. I was actually in the process of composing a PM to you suggesting that since the price of the GN tie per person has dropped so much (because of the number of people who are willing to go with that compromise, and because the tie is on sale), *I* would be willing to split the cost of the orange tie with you, if you would like to send him the orange tie, as a "loyal opposition" present. That offer stands, so poop on you. ;)

234. It wasn't about the tie, it was the general
attitude.

I know that posting leaves a lot to be desired in the inflection department, but I got the odd sense that you were usurping others whose idea this was (and I wasn't one of them, so I'm kind of a bystander in this whole thing).

And, alas, as a single mother with not a cent of child support in more than two years, I do not have the money to go halfsies on a tie for someone who probably thinks we're all crazy at this point anyway.

Your offer is appreciated, however, and poop on me.

I guess when it got to the point where this was NOT fun (as opposed to being really a snarky laugh), I lost my comedic attitude. I don't even know what the note is going to say and can't find it on here.

I had a bad day in child support court (hurry up and wait, hurry up and move the case, AGAIN) and probably shouldn't be making such delicate virtual decisions when real life is such a pisser. I did self delete a post of two as to not drag down the board.

I PM'ed you the message a bit ago
I realized at the last minute that I'd forgotten to make my daughter's lunch for tomorrow and then came back and found I hadn't sent anything. Duh! Sorry you had a lousy day in court. My best friend went through a contested divorce several years ago best described as "surreal" so I spent entirely too much time sitting in the back of family court. What a lot of misery washes through that place.

Truth be told, I don't know who originally started the tie idea. I got in on it Friday night, right after the show, and if I'd had any earthly idea I'd still be riding that bronco the following Wednesday while battling a migraine, I probably would have shut down the computer and gone to bed early.

Feel better. Sorry if I made your day harder.

167. Stop me before I shop for ties again.
Edited on Wed Jan-19-05 10:37 PM by bunny planet
Linkies to some more tall guy ties. We can do better than that orange tie, and the boring gold one too ladies. This is Keef we're talking about here.

http://www.forzieri.com/usa/deptd.asp?l=usa&c=usa&dept_id=17
The baby pink stripe and the pale yellow with the black stripe are happening.

http://www.forzieri.com/usa/deptd.asp?l=usa&c=usa&dept_id=17&pagina=3
light pinkish one with burgundy thingies on it.

Please stop me anytime, I have no self control. I think it's Keef withdrawal syndrome, I obsessively shop for ties now that I've had to miss the show two nights in a row and tommorrow night too.

I love a pink tie on a snarky guy though. With the dark grey suit and darker shirt. Uh oh, premature floataculation!!!!!

I wish guys would get in touch with their feminine sides and wear them. But I love pink--it's my favorite color.

I'm turning in early tonight. Y'all decide what to do and let me know what my $$$$ share is and I'm in--whatever.

Goodnight Ladies (and the brave men who hang with us).

And on edit--I'm now obsessed with ties--I keep staring at every tie I see every man on TV wear. I'm sick of ties!

191. Hey, kids, I got a new idea... a sorta long-term idea
what if we sent Democratic Underground coffee mugs to certain people who stand for our principles with a thank you note?

It would have to be carefully done, to indicate that it was a thank you from a group of individual members, NOT officially DU. Even at that, we'd probly have to ask approval of the Admins, I think.

I doubt there are restrictions on public officials accepting small gifts like this? I dunno... something to check.

But if it is deemed all OK, it would be a nice way to acknowledge the people who work FOR us, and maybe get the DU name into the offices of staffers and help show people that DU is a power of people.

What do ya think? Hey, betcha John Conyers could use a nice mug! And Arnebeck! And Boxer! And Tubbs Jones! And...

can you take care of the order before you get plastered? Bunny and lwfern aren't fussed about the snark and I don't think the current format is as confusing as the first version. Good story. I worked an open bar for a friend's anniversary party. I am NOT a bartender but I'd do it for free. People started to get impatient because I was slow. Well....I started double and triple shotting drinks. It got real funny real quick. People where so wasted, we ended up calling their kids to come pick them up. That was fun, watching mom's and dad's getting the "look" from their kids.

246. no, today's theme may possibly be "length of snark"
Clark2008 PM'ed me a suggested alteration to the message just before bedtime last night and I liked it. Woke up this morning, realized the damned wordcount program I've been using doesn't count BLANKS and we're probably over the limit unless you want the message to look really squinched up and ugly.

But Clark's snark fermented in my brain while I was sleeping and I dashed down a much longer message, with about 8 footnotes. I've PM'ed it to Crispini, who may or may not have already ordered the tie with the shorter message. If Crispini doesn't slaughter me and is open to the possibility of considering a longer snark (which would, in turn, necessitate the cooperate of bettyellen) it could be a whole new chapter. Not that this quite rates a meeting of the DUDQ.

And yes, I've been noticing neckties wherever I go. So glad we didn't decide to send floaty-heart boxers... then I'd be thinking about men's underwear all the time!
