Stan Lee to be awarded "tens of millions" in Spider-Man movie royalties
Marvel ordered to pay Spider-Man creator
Comic book publisher told to fork over 10 percent of movies' profits

NEW YORK - Stan Lee, the legendary cartoon hero creator who gave Spider-Man his powerful “spidey-sense,” is feeling a tingling of his own — in his wallet.

A Manhattan federal judge has ruled that Lee is entitled to a potential multimillion-dollar payday from Marvel Enterprises off profits generated by the company’s TV and movie productions — particularly the box-office smash “Spider-Man,” which earned more than $800 million worldwide, and its hugely successful sequel.

“It could be tens of millions of dollars,” Howard Graff, attorney for Lee, said Wednesday. “That’s no exaggeration.”

The Monday ruling from U.S. District Court Judge Robert W. Sweet found that Lee was entitled to a 10 percent share of the profits generated since November 1998 by Marvel productions involving the company’s characters, including those created by the prolific cartoonist.

3. I don't know, but...
...the movies have propped up Marvel's comic book empire, which has suffered greatly over the years. Very few titles survive that weren't initially created by Lee and artists Jack Kirby, Gene Colan, Steve Ditko, Don Heck...if the artists are alive, they should get a cut. If they've passed on, it should go to their families.

DC made headlines a few years ago when they arranged for royalties to be paid to Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster (creators of Superman). S&S signed away their royalties early in their career. Ultimately, DC did the "right thing."

Too bad politics isn't like comic books.
