Anyone here ever have a bunionectomy?
I'm having one next week (just one foot), and I'm getting more nervous by the day. Have to be on crutches for 5-6 weeks and rely on my husband to do stuff for me. Can you get used to crutches so that you can still cook and putter around? Or should I use this time to relax and let my hubby learn all about the daily tasks involved in running a household? (Not that he doesn't do his share of other chores, it's just that I do most of the shopping and meal prep.)

I'm a-skeered! If you've had one, does the pain really go away eventually?

1. Funny..I was visiting someone today who had one couple days ago.
She is up and hobbling without crutches. Said the pain is better today, but still using Percodan. Took one when I was there and the pain was gone by the time I left. She was using stairs and all. Just had a protective boot on her foot.

2. Yeah, I can't figure the crutches part out
my doc recommended them for me, but didn't for another patient of his who'd had a bilateral done (both feet). Of course, she fell down at one point and hurt her feet, which set her recovery back some, so maybe that's why he's now recommending them.

3. Yes I have had it done
on both feet. The first few days you will definately have to rely on hubby to help (I failed crutches) but doc put a walking cast on after a few days and it fine for short periods of time. I had to have pins put into my feet so standing and walking for any length of time was hard.
Dont be skeered, have doc give you good drugs and hubby can give you the remote and just relax.
My thoughts will be with you.
Blessings

5. Thanks for the nice thought
Do your feet still hurt? I'm supposed to be getting pins, too.

7. My stepmother did.
Her first one was not done properly. The dr. "overcorrected" the bunion.

She had a second one done much later to try to correct the overcorrection. It was about two months ago, I think. She is still in pain. The second operation was unsuccessful in that the leaning is a bit better, but not much. Not worth the cost and pain and trouble.

THE DR. AT THE FIRST OPERATION WAS DOING A PROCEDURE FOR ONE OF HIS FIRST TIMES - HE WANTED TO TRY IT OUT. Don't let a dr. do that! Be SURE and ask what procedure he's going to use and about how many times he's done that specific procedure. Be aware there's a new procedure out there floating around, and make sure he doesn't use it.

Having said that, I've known a couple of other people who've had it done. It was successful. It has taken all the people I've known who've had this MONTHS to fully recover. So don't think it'll all be better in a couple of months. This procedure apparently takes a while to heal, and the foot is apparently very sensitive.

9. Ack.
I first went to a doctor who looked to be about 15, so I kept shopping around. This guy has been around the block, so I fervently hope he knows what he's doing. Thanks for the advice--I'll ask more questions at my pre-op visit, when it won't be too late to back out. My sympathies for your stepmom--my own mother had a similar experience.
