I got the imrpession that the band members, with Grace Slick in particular, seem to REGRET their past. (The VH1 music special on the group confirms this theory too, much more obviously.)

Why?

Worst of all, for the song "Lather" (which is damn good musically (JA's guitarist was THE best) and lyrically, for it tells a story saying it's okay to be young at heart), Grace PRETENDS to forget and screw up some of the lyrics because the particular lyrics speak of using a particular drug. While it's a goofy line, it's part of the storytelling within the song. I don't see why it should be shunned so. :-(

Do you?

Is this some kind of a remake?

By the way, if you missed it, Spencer Dryden passed away last week.

TV shows of the era.

Damn good buy.

And Spencer Dryden died? Man... it's been a rotten week...

(on edit: great choices of songs to use and the 'videos' thereof. Immensely original stuff and great fun to watch. Technology has improved since. But creativity didn't always follow suit.)

3. Grace Slick has been doing this act for years

Grace's "drugs are bad, m'kay?" and "White Rabit is only about Alice In Wonderland" act. At least since the 1980s. Maybe earlier, but I was too young in the 1970s to be into Jefferson Airplane. It's really gotten tireing.

IMHO Surrealistic Pillow is one of the top 100 rock albums ever and there's nothing on it to be embarassed about. Now, if Grace Slick were embarassed about We Built This City it would come off as much more honest.

6. Paul Kantner has fun denouncing 'we build this city'... but I will admit,
On VH1, he even flipped the bird for that music special commemorating Starship when he had to talk of that song!! :yourock:

"White Rabbit" was supposed to be a sarcastic war of words against the older generation (of her time). There's a great beat, great rhythm, and the words for all their lush sarcasm are poetic and there's even a good chuckle at the end. "Doormouse said... feed your head." And performed with such gusto. It's not only smashing stuff, it's also funny because of how it aims at those the Airplane was persecuting. "Alice in Wonderland", yes, but not in the mere form of dissing a dumb fairytale. It was about the HYPOCRISY of drugs and Airplane was, and is, spot-on with the topic. (today's psychiatric industry instantly comes to mind.) It is as relevant today as it was 39 years ago. Possibly even moreso, but for different reasons. We all know how the drug industry wants us all doped on purple pills, beige diamond shaped pills, round white ones, whatever...

Drugs being bad is one thing, and she and Airplane had used them far more than I ever will, so her experience gives her some cred. But I doubt I'lll understand why she feels embarrased about her past. Almost to an extremely cynical level. Doubly especially as it made her famous. She bucked the system and even spat on it. Any artist of any medium is never a conformist. She would know that better than anyone; she sells artwork too (some of which is quite good, I'll admit.)

Surrealistic Pillow, Crown of Creation, Volunteers - all great stuff.

She's a very interesting person... but very strange with her reversal in attitude.

5. I remember that song *distinctly*; what's the drug....

reference?

Yes they were great; no , nothing to regret. Musically, they were spectacular for about 5 albums then broke-up and the magic was gone.

Any notion of when the special will be aired?

7. DVD release. If it is ever aired, it'd be on MTV or VH1.
I also covered my perception of the drug thing in post #6. (As I'd listened to the song 4 times this afternoon, I distinctly remember it too. I also have a knack of looking into things too much... :smoke: )
