Alas, after two years of indolent joy, I'm employed again... |
|
started today. A new Silicon Valley startup company, that's JUST what I was waiting for. It took a little longer than I'd expected, though, but it's exciting to be back doing what I love to do.
Sadly, my long lazy days of DU, XBOX, local coffee shops and long sessions of puppy-tickling are over.

1. You don't seem to be very unhappy with the last two years... |

so one might assume your previous employment generated enough cash for some time...
And: Congratulations to your new job!

I was much more fortunate than many people in similar situations. I'm single, childless and have a relatively affordable mortgage. I had to dip very heavily into savings, but I consider myself lucky to have savings at all.

The tech sector seems to be picking up...which looks to be a good thing for a LOT of long-term unemployed people...

it is. I think all the venture companies and entrepeneurs are finally starting to get back in after the last big shake-out.

7. Big corps are doing a lot more hiring, too. |

I've a friend who's at Georgia Tech, and apparently the number of recruiters (and jobs they're looking to fill) has doubled in the past few years.

The tech people have been hit hard the last few years. When you get laid off from Tech, where are you supposed to go? Tech was supposed to be the ANSWER!
I was ready to go to nursing school - it's a fast-growing industry.

A startup! Tell me that you found the job via craigslist, and I'll plotz right here :-) Seriously though, great news! Very glad to hear you've found gainful employment.

not through Craigslist, though I *DID* find my wonderful dog through there.
I got this the old-fashioned way - got a call from an old colleague who wondered if I was available.

Puppy tickling must be gradually reduced. Cold-turkey is not advised!

pangs. Belly rubs=love to my dog. He can't go 10 minutes without dropping to the ground, flopping onto his back, and offering his belly and his rear left leg for attention. And I'm as bad as he is-I've been known to wake him up, just so I could lavish attention on him. He doesn't complain!

It's good to hear the news. Congratulations. And believe me, I can relate.
I live in San Francisco and was a web developer during the boom, only to find myself out of work when the tech industry took a dive. I enrolled in City College in SF after losing my job and have been a student there ever since. In the meantime, I was completely out of work for three years and only last summer did I re-enter the work force with a part-time retail job.
It's heartening to hear that the tech industry is starting to recover. I'm sure it won't get back to the level it was back in 1999... although that may not necessarily be a bad thing. There was definitely a downside to the overheating dot-com boom here, in that rents were way too high and it became impossible for people to live or have businesses here that weren't involved in the tech industry.
