Raleigh DUers: WTF happened here?!?!?!? (inch of snow cripples city) |
|
Edited on Thu Jan-20-05 10:53 AM by kick-ass-bob
For those who did not hear, we got about an inch of snow that caught the city and DOT completely off guard.
Then schools let out early, and parents left work early - all at once. So many, in fact, that the salt trucks could not clear the roads. The result?
COMPLETE GRIDLOCK.
I ride a bus, so I waited for 45 minutes, got on and went 1.25 miles in an hour and a 45 minutes. I got off and walked the rest of the way home - 5-6 miles in an hour and a half. It's normally a 15 minute drive.
Gridlock started around 1:30-2:00 and there was still roll and stop traffic on almost all major roads until at least 10 or 11 pm. We had kids spending the night at schools because their buses couldn't get there. My friend was stuck on Hwy 64 from Zebulon to Raleigh for 8 hours and saw a truck jack knife and come to rest a car length from her.
Oy...

Yesterday I drove two friends to the Philadelphia International Airport, a drive that would normally take well under two hours for me. It turned into a 6 1/2 hour adventure, and both of my friends missed their planes. This was less than an inch of snow that was expected, and PennDOT was caught with their pants down!

I stayed in the house as I had the day off. People around here don't know how to drive in snow they scare the hell out of me stay off the road if you can. It really wasn't that big of a deal but I guess everyone panicked at the same time?
One time I was coming back from a job in Greensboro to Raleigh on 40 (it was snowing) it took us five, five hours to get home it was insane!! I think yesterdays insanity was unusual in some ways and in others the norm for around here.
I joked around with my mate said, "hey it's snowing you need to run out and get us some bread & milk" we both work at what I call an 'upscale foo foo grocery store' so it's a funny for us.
Never! I repeat Never! go to a grocery store on a day that it's snowing if you don't have too!

3. My wife actually went to the store after getting our kids |
|
(she works from home) and she said there was a ton of food there. I guess everyone was stuck in traffic instead of stuck in the grocery store.

4. We got an inch here as well |
|
and it completely paralyzed the city. It was unreal. I got stuck behind two jack knifed tractor trailer trucks and other people who don't know how to drive in the snow. It took me 2 hours to go five miles.
Unreal.
But, things could be worse. I did manage to get to the store ahead of time.

6. It was an odd type of snow |
|
got packed down and icy very quickly. I hadn't seen that since I left CT.
There are some days I wish I had an SUV, although I have to say, my van did great in the snow.
