Woman Gives Birth to Giant Baby
SAO PAULO, Brazil - A woman in northeastern Brazil has given birth to what one doctor called a "giant baby," a boy weighing 16.7 pounds.

Francisca Ramos dos Santos, 38, gave birth to the healthy boy named Ademilton on Tuesday at a hospital in Salvador, 900 miles northeast of Sao Paulo. He was the largest baby born at the Albert Sabin Maternity Hospital in its 12-year history, the hospital said.

"Obviously the baby was born by Caesarean section," hospital director Rita Leal said. "Both mother and baby are doing just fine."

Ademilton "could truly be considered a giant baby, for he was born weighing what a six-month-old-baby normally weighs," pediatrician Luiz Sena Azul told the Correio da Bahia newspaper.

5. He's a big boy alright.
My son was a 12 pounder and I thought he was big. He was also not delivered Ceasarian, although he probably should have been. My grandson was almost 13 lbs. Both my daughter and I are 5' in height and with relatively small bone structures. Nothing like feeling like an alien has taken possession of your body when you're growing a bump that size. I feel for this woman. He's going to be fun to pack around.

7. News reported that the huge size resulted from Mom's untreated diabetes
I had a 12lb. son and thought that was plenty large enough non-C, thank you!

8. Woman wanted child to skip adolescence
She thought that by extending her pregnancy she could deliver the child later. She could skip the whole breast-feeding deal and get ready for him to leave home.

Either that or she's the most anal-retentive woman on record.

10. My father weighed in at over 15 pounds when he was born.
This was many, many moons ago, and he was not a C-section delivery. He was my grandmother's 12th child, and she was a big woman. From the accounts I have heard, she had no problems with the delivery.

11. Ouch
My uterus and other sensitive bits hurt reading that article.

The first thing I wondered is if she had diabetes, which it turns out she does. I had gestational diabetes, and one of the concerns is overly large babies if it isn't treated effectively.

14. I know - my smallest was 9lbs and I was constantly
being given tests. Which was all right by me. Unfortunately, I just have big babies. They ranged from 9.1 - 12 lbs. I stopped after the 12lb.er. I was afraid of the next one. He JUST fit.

17. Yup! Same here.
My first was 8 lb, 1/2 oz. The second was 9 lb, 8 oz. The third was 10 lb, 9 oz. I had borderline blood sugar with the second, but not full-blown GD. With the first and third, my blood sugar was completely normal.
