Thoughts after Episode #2 of "Queer Eye for the Straight Girl" |
|
The only guy I like is Damon (the interior designer)--the other two guys are way too over-caffinated and over-amped, and are trying way too hard to come across as aggressively adorable. They're not; they're acting like pre-adolescent twits. (The swimming bit in the premiere really threw me; okay, you have a nice body, but was that necessary?) They're both trying to be Carson, and it's exhausting.
The token woman/lesbian (Honey Labrador) steals the show just by underplaying and keeping her wits about her. Occasionally, she seems ever so slightly patronizing towards the men (can you blame her?). But she's droll rather than slapsticky.
The formula by this point is pretty much foolproof--even my eyes misted up a bit when the girl proposed to her boyfriend (yes, you read that right), and he accepted. But I only see about 3 seasons for this, compared to the 5+ "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" will probably eke out before it runs its course.

Even if the girl is the "hero" there must be at least 3 to 5 men around her before the coveted 16 to 30 male audience will watch.
Buffy: 2 girls Buffy, Willow and various numbers of guys. from 2 to 5 Veronica Mars: 1 girl and 6 main guys (including the sherriff and the father) Any Law and Order show: one or two women, with several men.
Xena was the rare exception to this, but the guys watched anyway because of the possibility of 2 chicks getting it on.

why do 16-30 year old men need to be attracted to MEN on a show to watch? I mean, wouldn't scantly clad women do the trick? I just don't get certain things sometimes....

5. They don't identify with scantily clad women |
|
They do, however, have ego identification with other men. That's why pron always has the dorkiest looking guys.
The 16-34 male is coveted because they have lots of disposable income. Usually by 35 they are married and have kids. Disposable income drops. So next time you are watching Star Trek or any other Sci-Fi show (which are some of my faves) check out the gender ratios.
Also look at "action" or spy type shows: Alias, 24 and so on.
