I grew up on the border of Canada in upstate NY. We used to go to Ottawa and see Triumph everytime they came through town. I think I ended up seeing them four times. These guys rocked!
Huge Rush fan, too!
How come Limp Bizkit isn't on the list? Fred Durst annoys the shit out of me.

And how dare you put Rush on the list!? Sure, I know that it's Geddy Lee's voice that turns off some to Rush, but I loves me some castrato-style vocals. Nothing like a man with the octave range of a woman.
Back to Creed: Scott Stapp took his 'spread-my-arms like-dying-on-the-cross-Jesus-in-my-videos' gig too far. And then there's the Creed fan base, made up of noxious fundies. Creed. 'Nuf said.

More annoying than latter-day U2. U2 were once GOOD. Rush, on the other hand, have always been horrible. Geddy Lee's vocals are annoying, as are, almost invariably, the lyrics he sings ("Of salesmen!" I mean, come on...who can think this garbage is DEEP???); Alex Lifeson is supremely overrated; Neal Peart is passable, I suppose, but hanging around with those two hacks for all this time is a black mark.
Flame away.

Rush are brilliant instrumentally. I love Geddy's vocals. They are definitely unique, and they are not overrated on the instruments, IMO. Granted, some of their songs can be a bit pretentious, but listen to YYZ and tell me Geddy isn't one of the best bass players of all times.

For the record if you can't say something nice....eh, the hell with it, I have to say something anyhow.
Anybody who busts out the old canard "they're all technique and no feeling" is just trying to appear tres chic. It's inverse pomposity, the arrogance of the incompetent. And Kim Deal?!? Dude, I like the pixies, but hell man......
Rush has saved rock and roll for on at least three separate occasions, I have to go to bat for them!

but in my opinion you couldn't be more wrong if you told me shit tasted like strawberry ice cream.
But my larger and more lasting point is these "this band or that style sucks-threads" are pretty pointless and never really go anywhere. There really is no accounting for taste--nor should there be. I mean do you ever think somebody has said--"wait a minute, now that you bring up those points it turns out I all the music I love turns out to be shit?"
It's pretty clear we enjoy different kinds of music, for instance I won't listen to punk rock unless my only other choice is castration--and even then I'd have to think about it, just to see if they were serious. Now that's a pretty strong statement, but I really don't expect it to affect your opinion.
I do get tired of the "he's too proficient at what he does--that means he sucks" posturing though. It's like saying "I hate flying on that airline, sure all their landings are flawless--but where's the emotion?"

You have informed me that Rush is terrible, and yet somehow I remain unconvinced--and no matter how many times you make that statement I'm not likely to change my views.
For the record, I don't even own any Rush albums, I've seen them a couple of times and enjoyed it tremendously--but they aren't my favorite band or anything. I'm just telling you that musical enjoyment is subjective, not objective.
It's just that simple.

You see, I'm at peace with what I like, and what I don't. I don't take stuff I dislike as a personal insult anymore.
I gotta admit to a certain curiosity though--what put the bug up your backside to bitch about Prog? I've always thought of Rush as more of a hard rock outfit than actual prog though. In my mind Yes is like the definition of prog--the more unlike them you are, the less prog you are. We can probably both agree about that.
And you certainly seem to have a lot of familiarity with the form you despise. If I didn't have XM in my car I'd just about never hear any of this stuff--where are you going that this stuff is being forced on you?
Hell, as long as we're here, how do you feel anout fusion? I'd throw out Mahavishnu Orchestra as sort of a good reference point for "fusion."

108. I think you're oversimplifying the argument. |
|
I don't think anybody is saying "he's too proficient at what he does--that means he sucks", and I certainly don't believe that, but I do believe that technical proficiency does not necessarily lead to good music, especially when the artist exerts more effort to showcase his own technical proficiency than he exerts to be true to the music. Case in point: Joe Satriani. I don't argue that the man is a technically brilliant guitarist, but his music sounds like herd of cats in heat.
Rush is the same way. They're all about technical proficiency in service of their egos, not the music, IMHO.
By the way, I know Joe Satriani isn't a band, but can we add him to the list anyway? He's as annoying as a whole band.

I've just been playing around on the prog stuff but I truly love Joe Satriani. ;)
This came up a week or so ago, and after I blew off a little steam I got around to making the point that emotional response comes from YOU the listener--not the musician. You hear scales and wanking (boring) I hear energy, exuberance and a man enjoying what he does (good). Music triggers emotions differently in different people. To use a metaphor some people like to canoe, others like to downhill ski (and no, I'm not saying one type of music corresponds to either activity)
I've just noticed a tendency inpeople who don't like Joe to complain about it like every time they turn around they get bombarded with it and just can't take it anymore. Face it, as far as our culture goes, this shit is pretty obscure. I like it and I have to look for it. If you don't like it just ignore it, it'd be pretty easy to do.
For instance you don't hear me complaining about Norwegian Death Metal--I just let it slide....

Go pick up an album by Magazine (Howard DeVoto of the Buzzcocks' old band) and listen to Barry Adamson lay it down. Listen to the Pixies and dig on Kim Deal's bass work. Hell, even Sting, in the late '70's-early '80's, was better than Geddy Lee.

Who else is there? Obviously, if one is looking at the pretentious end of the spectrum, Jaco Pastorius is to Geddy Lee as Shakespeare is to Jeffrey Archer. Over on the other side, Peter Hook could make mincemeat of Lee.

These guys can play!! Geddy is an amazing bass player and Alex Lifeson is no slouch, either. Also, there are no other rock drummers that play like Neil Peart...he has a very unique sound.
I admit that their lyrics may be a bit pretentious, but their musicianship is incredible.

My daughter exposed me to them, along with a few other Christian hardcore bands. Not too shabby.

|
Edited on Thu Jan-20-05 10:23 PM by Wat_Tyler
who are christians.
Nick Cave, Moby, U2, Johnny Cash, Neil Finn, Mike Scott of the Waterboys - Christians who make good music. Unfortunately, if it's called Christian Rock, it's invariably bollocks.

If the "Christian" comes before the music, it's tripe. And unlike "Christian Rock" bands, the best Christian artists (Cave, Cash for the most part, U2 c. 1980-1991) are able to incorporate Christian imagery into their lyrics to great effect without committing the unpardonable sin of preaching.

If someone's relating their spiritual quest - that can make good music. If they're trying to sell me Jesus - it's gonna get ugly fast.

They do have the unfortunate distinction of having a large FReeper fanbase for reasons I'm not sure of, but I like a lot of their late-seventies stuff (Crystal Ball, Grand Illusion and especially Pieces of Eight) and some of their later stuff as well. And I do find Geddy Lee's voice more grating than Dennis DeYoung's...

I always wonder why Rush's Geddy Lee gets all kind of shit for his voice, but AC/DC gets a pass. I can never enjoy their music because of the gawdawful cat-getting-slaughtered sounds emanating from Brian Johnson (think that's the guy's name)'s throat.
Besides, I've had "Bastille Day" by Rush in my head all day; I love that one.

I like their original lead vocalist (Bon Scott) a lot better than Johnson. They went from whiskey-soaked vocals to helium-soaked vocals.

I saw them in 1991, on the Break Like The Wind comeback tour. Freakin' AWESOME show! So what if the stonehenge monument got trampled by a dwarf-- Nigel's erm, "interesting" guitar solo more than made up for it.
However, I was sorely disappointed that they didn't play anything off "Shark Sandwich". A vastly underrated LP, IMHO.

Annoying? Slightly (but not really enough to be up here). A band? Um, nope. "No man is a Bande, intire of him Selfe"...
Factoid: He was going to title his debut album "Bryan Adams Hasn't Heard of You, Either" :-) but the buzzkills at the record co. nixed it.
