Why are lions called 'kings of the jungle' when the live on savanna's and grasslands?

that 'kings of the jungle' is some variant that gained popularity among people who didn't have any idea of what lion habitat is.
Lions are also known as 'king of beasts', and I think it has to do with the mane more than anything. Maybe in ancient times, kings wore short cloaks around their shoulders (not much winter weather, in say, ancient Egypt) so an animal with a natural "cloak" might seem kingly.
King of the jungle being a variant of King of beasts.
But tha'ts just my WAG.
