Anyone want a GMAIL account?
I have like 10 invites. If you want 1GB of email space respond with an email addy so I can send you a invite.

1. What's the advantage of gmail?
I'm asking not to be snarky, but in genuine curiosity. I've had like 10 people offer me gmail as though it would be the solution to all my life's problems (or at least my ongoing computer weirdness ... it's the Pauli Effect, don't you know!), and I just can't see the advantage of having yet another e-mail address to have to keep track of, which sounds not too much different from Yahoo or Hotmail. What, specifically, is better about gmail than about any of the other free web-based accounts?

3. its 1 gigabyte of space
you can archive emails and search them later. It has some good spam filtering, and you don't get pesky alerts all the time saying you are running out of space if you get a lot of emails.

7. It really is pretty cool, I just signed up for one a couple weeks ago.
It's far different from any other web-based e-mail I've ever used or seen. You don't have to delete any messages, every single one is archived and can be relocated through a typical search feature.

Plus, as far as actual e-mailing goes, they are featured in a conversation format. So messages that are replied to, and then replied back to, and so on, are not separated by individual links, but are tabbed sort of like pages stacked on top of another, so you can click back and forth to earlier replies or "conversations", or, the whole conversation can be viewed all at once. Sort of hard to explain in words, I guess.

It seems the advantage would be for faster use, since you don't have to wait for separate pages to load for each individual message, it's all there on the same page. This would be nice for those with slower internet connections I would think.

Also, correspondence between you and another can be labeled, kind of like a folder, so you can click a person's name, and all your "conversations" can be found, each separated by particular conversations, i.e. replies and re-replies to an original message.

It takes some getting used to because it's so different, but everyone who uses it for awhile swear by it, and probably would never want to go back to any other e-mail program.

11. Thanks for the info
Sounds interesting, and the extra storage space is appealing. But right now I'm still seeing it as "one more account I have to keep track of," amidst several others. And when you're as disorganized as I am, one more thing to keep track of is like the proverbial straw for the camel. So, while I appreciate the offer by the OP, I'll decline for the moment, but will keep it in mind for the future.....

16. Yeah, I know what you mean.
There were a couple of accounts that were being hammered by SPAM, so I quit using them and let them lay dormant until they were suspended. Now I'll use gmail for my personal account and keep my other for online subscriptions, eBay, and other shit that you have to give your e-mail address out for, but don't necessarily enjoy "updates" and the like.

Edited on Fri Jan-21-05 12:45 PM by barackmyworld
PM me if you want one, with your email address. I have several accounts, all with 10 invites each. I love gmail for 3 reasons:

1) Truly amazing spam blocking. It is so accurate!

2) I have some accounts that are archives of other email accounts. I have all of my school emails forward to a spare account, leaving a copy of the email in my regular school account. That way, I can get my school email through Mac's Mail (which I love) but I can always have a copy saved, on gmail.

3) the search feature works is fast, unlike Hotmail and other crappy free mail.

22. Another advantage
Not only the search works fine but it aslo works like a regular google search. But it only searches your mails (subject and body). So, if you have tons of mail and want to find the one where you were talking about your grandma's broken gas grill... well, just type "grandma's broken gas grill" in the search and you'll find the email message you needed in just 5 seconds.

I love Gmail :)
