OH MY GOD MY WORK IS HAVING A RED WHITE AND BLUE PARTY
A co-worker is leaving the company because he just joined the marines. The company is throwing a small in-office party, to attend you must wear red, white, and blue or... camo. GOD. I am fully supportive of his decision to joint the military, but goodness... I guess I will not be attending. Can't I attend my friend's good-bye without the blatant symbolism?

1. the man is going straight into hell
when the lone cold iraqi nights and the stress of battle, seeing children shoot at him, seeing them die, the thought that he had to kill them, when he has do deal with that and longing for home, he will probably remember the party, Among other things as his reason for not eating his own gun

19. Well that is a given
I am not saying I do not want there to be a party. I am saying, why the theme? I would like to attend, but I am not proud to wear those colors right now. I would just like to be able to say goodbye without there being any sort of political message (or what I perceive to be a message) involved.

3. That's pretty easy, actually.
And you can do it WITHOUT looking like you're giving in to symbolism. Wear a blue suit, white shirt, red tie. (Of course, you may look a bit overdressed, but you won't look like a "patriotic" wanker, either.)

5. What's wrong with wearing red white and blue?
I must be missing something.

You know you could wear a flag ala Kid Rock.

16. If it were me -
I'd be bristling at being TOLD I had to wear "red, white and blue" or, even worse, "camo" in order to attend the party. Wearing red, white and blue of my own choosing for my own reasons is one thing. Being told what to wear to attend the going away party of a coworker is quite another. Shows of patriotism mean nothing if they are compulsory.

17. It is a personal choice
There is nothing wrong with wearing red white and blue, but I'm not into giving any impression that I endorse anything that is going on in this country right now. To be honest, those colors make me a bit ashamed lately. I want an America where I can be proud to where those colors again, no doubt. I wish my company would stay out of it.

7. This is just my thought - I would go anyway
He's joining the Marines, so obviously he is patriotic. Red, white, and blue means patriotism to a lot of Americans - which I don't translate as support for bushco.

I support American troops and the American Constitution. I'm not all that keen on showing the colors because it smacks of nationalism to me, but it's definitely NOT the same as supporting bushco. Many liberals support the troops.

If all else fails, you can tell everyone that you are wearing the colors in support of the French Revolution!

8. How?
How can you be "fully supportive of his decision to joint(sic) the military"?

By joining or staying in the United States military under Bush, a person gives their moral approval to the murder of innocent Iraqis in an illegal war.

We've all got to get over this mantra of 'support our troops' ... they are individuals with the power to make choices, too. People of good will need to start encouraging them to refuse to obey any orders that further the illegal killing of innocents ... and we all need to urge NO ONE to join the U.S. military until the troops are out of Iraq.

12. I respect him for putting his money where his mouth is.
How many people support the war but won't fight it? This is someone who is doing just that, joining up and doing what he believes in. He beleives the war is right, I do not. He is doing something about it. That is bravery, imo.

I just wish that the party had more of a neutral theme. We can still have a party, why the patriotic overtones?

13. Speaking just for myself, I'd attend to send him off and wish him well,
but I'd wear whatever I pleased, and I'd probably NOT wear red, white, and blue (or camo) in order to send the message that my employers do not select my wardrobe, as well as the message that I'm not into dressing like a flag.

Of course, you'll be looking for another job after this...

Go dressed in red, white, and blue, and a George W. mask.

Your going-away gift to him? A flag-draped coffin.

20. THAT would be taking it a bit far.
I like the guy, and I respect the fact that he is actually doing something about supporting the war instead of just supporting it with a stupid yellow ribbon sticker or something, but yes, I suppose that would be getting my own message accross, hm. I wish the whole thing was politically neutral althogether.

Actually had a girl walking around with an "Elect Kerry the President of France" t-shirt. I should really invest in a flag.

27. Where do you work?!
(Don't provide too much detail, of course, lest one of 'em is lurking.) My company specifically bans shirts with political statements on them.

I would've probably looked at that shirt and thought, "Well, I'll be avoiding her in the future. Thank goodness she's at least providing me a warning label by advertising her stupidity."

29. Lets just say it is a very conservative company.
No one would likely complain about her shirt, and therefor there is no ban in place, but a complaint would likely be put in place should I wear something in the same vein, and we would likely see a ban. I should just start wearing shit like that so that they have to put a ban in place to silence me.

24. Good plan
Because when you mix all the colors, you get black, so red, white, and blue are in there. :)

Buy a brown afro wig, take along some art supplies, and demonstrate this with paint before you bring out your easel and teach us how to make "happy trees."
