3. Really now.
Sorry, but it doesn't get the Blizzard of 2005 just for a foot of snow.

23. It isn't the inches that make the blizzard...it's the winds.
Edited on Fri Jan-21-05 06:13 PM by mcscajun
This morning all The Weather Channel was talking about was maybe 3 inches of snow Saturday night. Now, here's what they're saying:

A dangerous and significant winter storm will affect the entire area Saturday into Sunday.

(snip)

The first phase will feature very heavy snow Saturday afternoon into Saturday evening where the majority of the accumulating snow is expected to occur. The snow is expected to fall so heavily that near white-out conditions are likely with rates reaching one to two inches per hour. The second phase occurring overnight Saturday into Sunday will feature lighter snow, but considerably stronger winds.

(snip)

This will cause blowing and drifting of what is expected to be a very powdery snow. This may cause blizzard conditions at times.

(snip)

Total accumulations after all is said and done will average 10 to 15 inches across the entire warning area.

Travel conditions will become downright hazardous...

4. this thing could last 24 hours
if it does, we could be in deep shit (snow?) if it keeps its 3inches/hour pace the whole time

29. Still wimpy
This is the latest 1"+ snowfall for the Twin Cities in recorded history.

It is nice to see the snow, and being so late in the season it will not last very long as the sun keeps going higher.

13. Living in NE Ohio - it is just another day in the winter
4 - 5 inches just a daily thing here.
24" or more, now that would be a "SNOW EVENT" as the media now likes to call it.

15. Anyone remember the blizzard of 96
I remember it like it was yesterday...

It came a few days after new years and I was supposed to fly back to Florida (to go back to school) but I got stuck in Jersey for like a week. I think we got somewhere in the ball park of 26 inches, which is an absurd amount of snow especially for the mid-Atlantic region. That was a fun week to be a kid! Hell I wouldn't mind this "blizzard" canceling classes on Monday. I'm not going to get my hopes up because we could end up only getting a dusting

17. i remember the blizzard of 94 better
I was trapped in a camp with other cub scouts. I remember trying to go sledding with another scout in the middle of the blizzard and we ended up hugging the ground because the wind was so bad. then when we tried to get home, all the highway entrances were blocked off with snow drifts

18. I remember both.
Now those were crippling storms. There was snow everywhere. There were 2 '96 storms about a week apart. There was like 4 feet around my house.

22. yeah the first 96 storm...
was a bad ice storm. Thats what canceled my first flight, then like 3 days later...POW 2 feet of snow!

I remember the 94 storm too...but I wasn't in it, I was living in Illinois at the time (yes I've lived in many places) and my mom was flying to Jersey to be in her friend's wedding. She too was stuck in Jersey because her flight was canceled for a few days. Seems like every time we have a bad storm someone I know has to catch a flight somewhere. I guess this means it won't be that bad because no one I know is traveling!

25. Yeah, that was the year we ran out of lawn
We have a teeny little front lawn, and when we shovel in front of our house, the choice is between piling it up on the lawn and piling it in the street between our two cars. We try to spread it around and do some of both.

Usually, enough melts between storms that there's room to put the fresh stuff. But that year -- it must have been '96 -- the snow just kept piling up and piling up. Eventually, we were having to shovel it onto piles that were above our heads, which is no.fun.at.all.

28. Talk to me when it passes
the blizzards of 77 or 79. I was too young for the blizzard of 68, I remeber 79 REAL well. We had family coming in from all over the country and we had over 30" fall the two days prior.

It was awesome.
