9. It is impossible that she is size 6, unless they're talking about
some other country's sizes.

I saw her on TeeVee just yesterday. It is impossible that she is size 6, if she is referring to the same sizing system other American women use. Impossible.

My mother was size 8, and she was MUCH smaller than Laura.

16. Given that the camera does actually add pounds, and that
the angle of the picture in this thread isn't the most flattering, I'd buy that she's a 10. Maybe a 12. It really is hard to tell from pictures, though. It would be easier to tell in person.

Size 6 is bigger than it used to be, but only marginally. It hasn't grown that much.

For the record, I don't really find anything wrong with Laura's figure. She's proportionate, well-shaped, and looks fine to me (some of her wardrobe choices are another story). She's just not a 6.

She does look slimmer, and her white daytime lab coat was actually flattering. The gown almost made it. Just too tight.

The most hideous thing she ever wears is that ball and chain of hers.

And we never forget that most inportant fact.

53. I'd argue that it was only her business, if she kept it to herself
why anyone cares, other than to just chalk it up to one more thing they lie about, is another issue. But, IMO, if you announce your dress size to the media, it is fair game for discussion fodder.

If I were a public figure, I wouldn't talk about it. The media would speculate, because that's what they do, but I wouldn't participate.

If you don't believe me, go look at the size 6 clothes in the store. They're for skinny people.

The only possible way that this is true is if she patronizes a store or designer who deliberately understates his sizes. Back in graduate school, I went to a clearance sale at an Ann Taylor store and spotted a jumper that I liked. I tried on my normal size (10 at the time--those were the days), and it was massive. I kept going down the sizes and finally found a size 4 that fit. That is the only time in my life that I ever wore a misses' size 4, and I'm sure it was the result of trying to flatter the customer by understating the size.

I'm a size 6 and I photograph bigger than I am but I'm still half her size.

A size 6 is really tiny, especially an "old" size 6, as opposed to the more recently inflated sizes. (Deflated sizes?) In young people's clothing at Old Navy I'm a 4. Come on! At least make it a little believable!

This was back in the Reagan White House days, and I remembering thinking that they were bending the laws of physics on that one. I'd believe Nancy Reagan is a 4 or smaller, but there's no way Laura Bush is a 6. They lie about everything else, so it's not surprising they'd lie about their weight and dress size.

Unless Laura is five feet tall, there is NO WAY, the number one reason being she is larger in the middle. She has lost weight, but I think it's a stretch to say she's a 6. Maybe, *maybe* an 8.

But, she wears really ugly clothes--so if she is a size 6, perhaps she should start dressing like it.

57. Probably not.
I'm smaller than she is and my size varies depending on the cut of the clothing, but I don't wear less than an 8.

I think the larger issue has to do with a society that judges a woman based upon her clothing size or any other factor of her personal appearance that necessitates not only these falsehoods, but a rampant increase in women having to have themselves in some way surgically altered as they age in order to still be judged as worthy humans.

I personally feel unqualified to call myself a Feminist if I come on these boards and insult another woman solely based upon physical factors regardless of what their party affiliation is. That's my opinion and from the various Laura and Jenna threads recently seen around here, it appears many otherwise thoughtful and intelligent women of DU disagree with that opinion.

I find that disappointing, but 'oh well'. :(

58. Laura Bush might very well be a size 6.
Edited on Fri Jan-21-05 08:55 PM by SOteric
Not that I particularly care, nor do I consider it politically or socially relevant.

Sizes mean little really, and body types vary greatly between individuals. I petite size 6 under 5'2" might actually be a bit on the rounded side, whereas a 6' tall woman comfortably wearing a size 6 will look like a holocaust survivor.

What I do think is the case is that Laura Bush, whether she's advised by fashion mavins or not, has little style and no idea how to dress herself. I don't say that like it's a bad thing, she may very well have different priorities in her life and if so, I applaud that. It's still nonetheless a fact that she seems to persistently chose clothing which is ill-suited to her frame and downright 'frumpy' in it's style quotient. And that's the reason I think she could be a size 6. Even a size 2 frame can look dumpy and overweight simply by chosing the wrong clothing.
