Has anybody had vegemite?
I think I can safely say that vegemite is the most revolting, disgusting thing I've ever had the displeasure of tasting.

Its very nutritious but, yes, it tastes like concentrated, burned basmati rice.

7. We were on a tour of Britain with a bunch of Aussies
They had a jar with them and encouraged us to try it on toast. They said parents feed it to their babies - supposed to be great for colds. They grow up accustomed to it and love it.

I had an expat cubemate who made me try it once. I couldn't get it out of my mouth fast enough.

on edit: She was a Brit, so it was actually marmite, but same difference.

10. Haven't thought of that in years!
My grandparents went to Australia when I was in fourth grade. I had one horrible taste of the stuff when they returned.

Twenty years later, haven't thought of it in years, but my mouth still threw a fit just reading your subject line. :puke:

19. It's "concentrated beef extract", I think. I was visiting my cousins in
Australia years ago, and the SMELL of it woke me up. They carry large jars of it when they travel. They can't bear to be away from their Vegemite.

To each his own, I guess. I love scrapple.

27. That's Brovil
Brovil is the tar like paste that is concentrated beef extract. It's actually quite nice as a base for stews and soups or mixed in a little with porridge. Vegimite and Marmite which are both disgusting also come in identical sized bottles and look exactly the same as Brovil. You have to make sure you are buying the right stuff!

As far as I know, the only people who like vegemite are Australians. I've got some relatives there. I wonder if they eat it (They're immigrants but I think the children may have been born or at least raised there)

And there are no meat products in either.

29. I've had Marmite,
When I was traveling through New Zealnad and associated lands. A friend put it on toast for breakfast--I though it was okay, and would join in just to see the disgusted looks on other people's faces!

I haven't had it since then however--and I have seen it in stores. How close are Marmite and Vegemite?
