Edited on Sat Jan-22-05 02:47 PM by BullGooseLoony
one is supposed to dress in the office, for school.
Pssssh how in the hell am I going to do this?

It's due in about eight hours. This is going to be one of the worst "papers" I've ever written.

2. Depends on what "office" is |
|
Where is the "office"? Shirt and tie are good in some areas, while worn jeans are better in others.

Write your paper all serious and such, and on a third page put a 72-point "Or," followed by two pages of "commandments" as above. :)

I had it saved because I was writing a manual for a client. http://www.askmen.com/money/successful_100/105_success.htmlI thought it was pretty helpful.

7. Depends on the office. |
|
A brokerage or insurance office is one thing.
The box office at a porn theater is another thing entirely.
Hell, when I was writing comedy full time you'd have been lucky to catch me in my office with pants on.
It's not what you think. Things are just...funnier in your underwear.

11. Yeah, it's not really that I don't know how to dress... |
|
It's just how do you write two pages on the kinds of things one should wear?

Consider all types of situations, the four seasons, men, women, and level of employement -- CEO to mail room.
The more divisions you can brainstorm, the ideas you will have. Then sketch out a flow chart, combine some areas, tack on an intro and a conclusion, and Vi-Ola! You're done!
Take it from moi, a professor of Writing and Composition.

18. There is professional dress...which is the type of dress |
|
Edited on Sat Jan-22-05 04:29 PM by ikojo
one would engage in when meeting a client or attending a business meeting. You then go into what constitutes professional dress for females and for males...for instance some companies (the marketing dept. at my company) have strict guidelines on professional attire...purses must match shoes which must match the primary color in one's outfit. A man MUST wear a tie and a coordinating jacket.
There is professional lite, which is not as strict as professional. There are times when it is appropriate to dress in a professional lite manner, again cite examples of what is professional lite for females and for males.
There is then business casual. This is a tradition that arose primarily as a result of the dot com boom but also with the help of the clothing industry (levis, eddie bauer and such).
I work for an HMO and never see clients or the public. In my office we are allowed to dress business casual during the week and casual on Friday. Again there are some guidelines as to what is business casual. Where I work BC is a pair of khakis (never jeans except on Friday) and a knit or polo type shirt (this is what I wear). On Fridays I wear tie dyes and other Grateful Dead shirts.
My boss is not strict about dress at all for which I am thankful.
I hope I helped. You should be able to google the terms and come up with something.

I didn't throw in the business-lite, thing, but most of my paper is making a distinction between business and business casual, and when they're appropriate.

9. If you need to pad it, |
|
talk about the history of changing fashions-for example, until the late 60s, women didn't wear slacks to school or to the office. You could talk about the importance of modesty and professionalism-no tight clothes, covering up skin-how these tenets are found in many cultures. Discuss the fact that some schools ban certain colors because they represent gang membership, so that appropriate dress depends on culture.
You might even discuss TLC's program "What Not to Wear" as a place that gives rules for appropriate dress-ironically, I'm watching it as I write this post!

10. Easy! You just start by writing down what appropriate clothing would be. |
|
If you school has a dress code, then so much the better. That should take up about one third to one half the page.
Then you speculate as to why such clothing rules would have been made... that could take up more than the rest of the paper, but you will have to go back and edit it so that you add a paragraph or two on the horrors that could ensue if the dress code rules are not followed.
Close out with a paragraph or two on whether or not you feel the dress rules are valid and why or why not.
You can make this very humorous, if it won't get you in trouble. In truth, there are some very valid points to be made for having ground rules for appropriate dress, however, these rules should be more guideline rather than hard and fast rules, depending on the age range and type of work one does or the school one attends.

14. Use a fixed width font |
|
like Courier New, etc. if your professor hasn't dictated the style. Back in the day, I found that 2 pages of something typed in Times New Roman became 3 pages when switched to Courier New.
Good Luck!
