1. If you get a cramp like that in your calf |
|
extend your toes as far as you can, making your foot perpendicular to your leg. The cramp eases immediately.

It is sometimes caused by pointing one's toes, which happens a lot when your feet are under the covers. To stop it, flex your foot. This can help ease or even stop the pain. Hope it works the next time you have this problem.

3. Vitamin E (green, leafy vegetables) can help. |
|
I quit taking my E supplement when they came out with that recent news story, and I am getting them again. Not scientific, but my sister told me that that is what can happen to your heart only you can't flex your heart. Why Vit E is preventive for heart attacks, maybe. I get a lot of medical advice from my sister.

... if it's at all possible, keep a metal cookie sheet in the fridge ... when you get a cramp, hobble to the kitchen and stand on the cold sheet.
Something about the cold fires neurotransmitters to get the blood moving and makes the calf muscles 'unspasm'.

6. Yeah, used to get them a lot |
|
When I was doing synchronized swimming (lots of toe-pointing). While it hurts like #$@#%!, the best way to get rid of it quickly is to flex your foot with your leg fully extended.
Potassium is a good plan, too.

7. Yeah--and the pain probably seems worse |
|
because all you've been doing is sleeping! It's actually kinda startling and I've woken up like--"Is this how strokes start?" And then I massage the hell out of my calf and go back to sleep.
