Help me remember the name of this movie

I read the book before it was made.

It starred Shelley Winters as the mother of a pampered daughter who, along with her boyfriend, murdered an older woman socialite in New York.

The mother steadfastly stood by her daughter and hocked everything in order to hire the best defense lawyer for her.

It was painful and pitiful watching the mother face the fact that her treasured daughter was indeed a murderess.
