Seeking advice RE: chronic car break-ins |
|
Edited on Sat Jan-22-05 08:23 PM by tridim
It's becoming clear that someone has it out for me and my stuff. I've had four stereos stolen, two windows broken, a trunk and door lock destroyed in the past 4 months. Last night was the final straw.. I decided to leave my doors unlocked because I have no stereo and I don't want another broken window. Well, they broke in again and went through the entire car looking for little things to steal, like a screw driver, my loose change and my sunglasses. It's just pathetic. It's like they're deliberately targeting my car for some reason. Could it be my DU and K/E stickers? Why the hell would anyone steal a pair of $10 sunglasses?
I'm at my wits end with this crap. I'm ready to rig up a trap or place some bait and hide out with a baseball bat. The cops wont help, and insurance doesn't compensate me. I think it's time to take matters into my own hands. Any ideas?

trunk as a car alarm? Maybe you should keep a big mean dog in your car.... Only kidding!!!!!
Can you put a really loud screeching alarm on the car so if anyone comes near it the alarm will attract attention? Can you set up a fake (or real) camera focused on your car so you can catch the person in the act?

9. I was thinking about rigging up a camera |

But it's too much of a hassle and expense. I'd have to record it as evidence, and it's just not practical. Alarms are too expensive as well, and pointless because I have nothing in there to steal. They stole it all already.
My best idea so far is to rig up a can of pepper spray that goes off when a stereo is removed. I'm a McGyver type. But that would probably ruin my seats and piss the thief off to the point where he beats the crap out of my car. I don't necessarily want to hurt the guy, I want to catch him and get my stuff back.
Edit: I'm now thinking about stuff like xacto knife blades under the door handles. That's probably not legal though.

10. It's averaging about once a month |

but the last two incidents were about 5 days apart. I'm through with stereos. I'm not giving him another one.
Of course I want to get the perp. I want my stuff back!

13. I'm almost positive it's a neighbor |

Although I don't have any enemies here and I know about 90% of the people. There is one family (with two punk ass teenagers who never seem to go to school) that I once called the cops on because the father was beating up his wife. That's my first hunch. I'd love to be able to confront them, but I don't have the evidence yet.

No need to have it set to go off at the slightest bump, but it is a deterrent, that flashing red light on the steering column. I've had an alarm in my 92 Civic since I bought it in late 91, parked outside close to the city center for its entire life, and it's never been touched. Also I get a 10 or 15% deduction on my insurance for that.
