What might be a good substitute for a serrano chile?
Supposed to have one seeded sliced serrano chile in the soup, as well as some cilantro. Local store had neither, and now there's enough snow on the ground that I don't wanna go out to try the other store.

What might be a good substitute? I have some chile powder and a few other spices in the cupboard. Any suggestions?

Not much substitutes for cilantro, I know. Hmmm.

1. Well, any dried chili pod or powder will do >
Just remember to cut the portion by about 2/3.

There's no substitute for cilantro, IMO.

2. You're not likely to have a good substitute,
The Serrano boasts some fairly serious firepower. Do you have any chili peppers?

You could try cayenne (red pepper) or possibly a cayenne sauce such as Tabasco. It'll be different, but should still be pretty tasty.

Personally the Cayene is my favorite pepper--but maybe that's just me.

Good Luck
