2. It sounds like artillery |

not just a small shotgun...it sounds like freakin military artillery and we are NO WHERE NEAR a military base.

Fireworks can make that sound. Is there a fireworks manufacturer anywhere near where you are that could be testing them in the city someplace?

I know what you mean exactly. We have an old military base, range type mess behind us, they don't fire off anything any more but when we lived on the other side the stuff they fired off litterally rocked the house.Pictures jumped on the walls.

Depending on where you are that can make a big difference. I know people who hear shots practically every day in their neighborhood.

it's a small town and we're not even accustomed to hearing sirens where I live, much less gunshots. (well, artillery like anyhow.)
It's quieted down now.

7. Is your small town near any type of mining facility? |
|
I know my parents once lived in a small town and a few miles away, not THAT close, was some sort of salt mine I think. Occasionally when conditions were right they'd hear, and sometimes feel, explosions from the mining detonations.

I know that sometimes fermentation can cause a grainery to explode. Might wish to check it out visually-from a distance. If you know who owns the grainery you might wish to report the sounds you heard.

14. Around here, all the mom n pop stores have them |
|
Call the local Mom n Pop grocer. They always have the gossip.
Are you sure it wasn't a nail gun repairing a roof? They can be pretty noisy. Some heavy equipment can make some racket. Not trying to diminish your concern; I've gotten worked up myself over stuff that turned out to be benign, though at the time I was really curious.
