such as DirectPC or wgatever it may be called now.
There are other vendors.
But it has limitations and issues, at least a while ago when a friend in the boonies of Idaho tried it.

8. Start yer own wireless provider |
|
Seriously. Buy a big pipe and start selling wireless access to your neighbors. Fellow out here (sticks of CO) did just that.

9. Any microwave providers in your area? |
|
Before SBC finally rolled out DSL in my area, a lot of people around here relied on point to point microwave connections. It's probably the least well known of the broadband options because it's only available in rural areas, but it works fairly well (signal degrades a bit when it's raining) and the cost can be somewhat reasonable if your local provider amortizes the cost of the equipment into your monthly payment. I used to pay $79.00 a month for a 256k dedicated connection (slower than DSL, but leaps and bounds faster than dialup) with my equipment costs included (3 year minimum contract), but if your provider doesn't include those you could be facing between $700 & $1000 in startup costs.
It beats satellite in performance, so it's at least worth looking into.
