Not supposed to deface money (I believe) but you can write anything you want on your checks EXCEPT do not threaten. Threats are always illegal and can get you in trouble, or at least hassled.

There is no way to trace cash (yet), it is illegal to deface it.

However, I did just get a 10 with "Tiffany & Mitch forever" written on it.

All of your check must go through at least one bank. Banks are federally backed institutes and are therefore obligated to report any suspected threats or someone who may aid in a threat against the pres or government. Just plan an all american dinner with apple pie to have all laid out to serve to the FBI agents who will be sent to ask you what your intention is for writing "Bush Sucks" on your checks and try to remember to scream, "I was born with the freedom of speech!" as they put you in the car. Remember, you can't sue the government afterward.
