Steelers loss = Increased domestic violence |
|
I represent plaintiffs in PFA (protection from abuse) actions in Pittsburgh. An attorney told me once that the number of PFA petitions sharply increases in the days immediately following a Steelers loss. For the love of God, if you're concerned about your fellow man (and woman), root for the Steelers today!

A man got into an argument with his wife because was watching the game and she didn't want to. He won by striking her a few times; she went into the bedroom, laid down, and died. He watched the rest of the series from jail.

4. I'm quite familiar with Pittsburgh. It's not exactly a Woman's Rights town |
|
...even when the Steelers are not playing. And with the economy down all over, and the Steel Industry long-gone, I can only imagine the Domestic Abuse pressure-cooker they've got going there now.

11. Well, since you're "quite familiar with Pittsburgh", why don't you |
|
give us some statistics to back up your comments? I'd be curious to see how Pittsburgh stacks up against other comparable cities.

5. while i have no evidence on this particular matter one way or another, |
|
i'm inclined not to believe it.
a while back, there was a "news story" that the annual peak incidence of domestic violence was always super bowl sunday. turns out this was just a rumor started by people trying to promote awareness of domestic violence. or maybe it was started by someone trying to make it look like feminists were trying to ruin an america tradition. i don't remember. anyway, it did increase awareness, though it also caused some backlash and resentment.
this sounds like just another variation on a theme.

7. Well, this was an attorney who handles PFAs frequently |
|
He would be in a position to know firsthand.
Our office generally handles a minimum of 5 PFA cases per day, sometimes as many as 17. There are a lot of ill-tempered people, as well as those with untreated mental illness (who are really the scary ones).

6. It's true of the superbowl as well(yes, I know it's not the superbowl) |
|
but domestic violence incidents increase after the superbowl when the supported team loses...
they also increase when cable goes out

snopes has this one, at least the "biggest day of the year" version. http://www.snopes.com/crime/statistics/superbowl.asp

10. I really didn't need any extra reasons to cheer the Steelers on |
|
But I will add that one just for my fellow woman's sake.
