Semi-official Blizzard of 2005 thread |
|
Is everyone okay? Was it really as bad as the media played it out to be? We have been under a blizzard watch, hazardous weather, you are all going to die watch, since yesterday and just got a dusting of snow. It is cold and windy, but not unbearable. I was out in the driveway today playing with the dog and and drove downtown and it was just a normal winter day. I am in central Maine.
How is everyone else doing?

1. My city is all but shut down |
|
some of the roads are still barely passable because of blowing and drifting snow. I've been cooking food for tonight's Pats game. It's been a nice cozy day at home, and I'm happy we didn't lose power like a lot of folks on the Cape and South Shore.

dig out their cars by tomorrow morning, so we don't have to do anything at all :). I went down and pitched in for a while this afternoon, helped them shovel for an hour or so.
It's still blowing around, but I think it'll be okay by tomorrow.

I remember too many years of shoveling out-it was no fun.

6. I used to have a garage before I moved out of my old place. |
|
I still had to dig out a very short driveway (like 5 feet), but that was it. Never had snow on the car or ice on the windows.

3. Dug myself out this afternoon. |

I'd say we had about 15" in Central NJ, with very little visibility for maybe 10 hours. I only cleared as much as I had to, but that meant over 100' of driveway. Almost stalled my snowblower a few times. Not nearly as bad as 1996 here, though.

9. It was pretty bad here. |

We lost power for a few hours. Very windy. My apartment complex plowed me in. Over 2 feet of snow. But I'm still glad I live in the Northeast.

11. With all the travel advisories yesterday, we did what every |
|
Wisconsinite might have done: went out to the barn. We just took it easy, and really, the roads weren't that bad. Many spots we could go the speed limit. Spent a few hours digging out part of the parking lot so we could move our cars, but it was a nice snow to shovel (light).
What was interesting is we noted that with all the new technology in cars, snow removal equipment, and ice-melting products, why are more people in the ditch now than they were 26 yrs ago in the Blizzard of '79? Have people become worse drivers now that they think their cars, SUVs, and 4WD vehicles are going to do all the driving for them?
The roads were good yesterday compared to what I remember as a kid...and we still made it everywhere we needed to go then in a little '77 Mazda GLC.
Horses loved the snow and had a blast tearing around about 15" of the stuff.
