He had the most amazing ability to put you on his side when a joke bombed. So whether he was funny or not (and he was funnier a lot more often than he wasn't), you were still always "with" him.

Seriously, with respect to the man, he was too much my father's generation, sense of humor, too square, too fast with the cheap shot at anything that was not mainstream, and most of all I really never found very funny his costume antics which were frat house bullshit.
But he was a great natural comedian, to be sure, with a gift for the wonderful comeback from a dead joke and excellent delivery. And he did know his audience - I guess that's where he lost me.
I imagine Nixon thought he was a hoot.

He was a good host for that show, but as a comic.. Well, as Bob Newhart said to him one time, he was at his best (funniest) when his jokes were bombing.
