DU Ladies - "Bridget Jones Diary" ?
I'm watching it for the first time on NBC and remembering there was alot of publicity about ALL THE WEIGHT Renee Zellweger had to put on to play Bridget.

I think she looks terrific in this movie, with what, 40 extra pounds?

4. Yes, looks healthy! And more attractive!
...guess I'm worried that this "look" is supposed to be FAT. As I recall she gained the weight quickly on a junk diet of donuts and ice cream and if the camera adds 10 pounds....? Just an unhealthy message overall :(

2. There are a few scenes where I can see the weight, otherwise,
she looks just FINE in that film. Even when I can see the weight she looks fine.

I always thought Bridget was heavier--maybe like the gal Hugh Grant fancies in Love Actually...who is also beautiful.

I too didn't get all the stupid hoopla.

6. The other hoopla was her Brit accent.....
I don't notice that it's bad, though better than Madonna's...lol. I'm wondering if Kate Winslet would have been more appropo for this part, she's a natural Bridget :)

22. Yeah, but Kate got it for playing Rose in Titanic...
Kate's American accent is flawless, quite amazing.

I did notice Bridget Jones' accent...but I know quite a number of Brits so... it wasn't HORRIBLE, but there was definitely a weirdness about it.

3. I actually think she looks better
under normal circumstances she is down right emaciated- and the lips pop out more.

I'm grossed out by her to begin with- I dont think she's very pretty b/c she is CONSTANTLY doing the pouty lip face.

10. Glad it's not just me.
I can't stand her mouth/lips. I don't mind her too much, though her voice grates on my nerves. But the mouth? UG.

We call it Constipated Mouth around here. And she has it BAD. Everytime the camera is on her, she's pooching out those lips like someone's about to plant a kiss on her.

12. Ew. Don't watch the movie....read the book
The book is GREAT and (imo) nothing like the movie. I loathed the movie and couldn't understand why they had to get Renee "I always look like I'm passing a huge turd" Zellweger to play Bridget. They should have gotten a REAL English gal to play Bridget.

Plus, the way I read the book, Bridget was supposed to be a bit fatter, and I think that made for a more horrible movie. I mean, ooooh....Renee Zellweger gained weight and weighed ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY FIVE POUNDS for the film...oh my god...what a fucking martyr. SOmeone, like, erect a statue in her honour :eyes:

Sorry. I was terribly disappointed in the movie. I read the book years before it was a film and bleh....just bleh

14. I enjoyed the movie, but the book was definitely better.
The edition I read actually had Bridget weighing 125, at most. They had Renee Zellweger gain too much in my opinion. Bridget wasn't overweight. She just thought she was.

16. What year/edition is your book?
Mine was an original edition from England, before it was released in the US. It's around here somewhere.....can't find it....

In my edition, the THINNEST bridgette ever weighed was 125-ish. During the part where she put on the most weight, she got up to 140, then stopped writing in the weight until she started losing.

Another friend of mine has a newer edition and she said the same thing that you say---that she was thinned down in her edition of the book.....which is none too surprising to me for some reason.

Basing the movie on my reading of the original book, Renee gained too LITTLE weight...she needed to gain more.

23. Mine was the US edition.
I'm not sure of the year because I checked it out from the library. I've heard of there being different weights in different versions. It's doesn't make sense to me. Her exact weight makes no difference to the meaning of the book.

She gained more weight for The Edge of Reason. Everyone says she gained too much for that one. I don't think you can ever make people happy with a movie adaptation of such a well received book.

18. Sizes mean nothing.
I'm 5'8", 138 lbs, and also a size 8. Men like a bit of flesh. I know, I was a skeleton until I had my third child. Now I'm average.

21. Obviously I don't know for sure, but I read that she DID weigh 140.
She started out at 115 and gained 25 pounds for the role in the first movie.
